[2022] VT2: audio cuts out randomly

I've played this game off and on for years. Started again a few days ago. My audio to my entire system will cut out in game. Sometimes loading a map, no enemies on screen, beginning/middle/end of a horde. Just seems to happen. I did some searching on reddit and general google searches but didn't find my exact issue. To get audio back I need to either switch the audio output in windows and then back again. Or restart my computer.

Audio settings are set to high in game. Tried stereo and 5.1. Would like to know the solution to this.
