[2020] bot question on xbox

The bot threads on wiki are years old, and I just got the game last night to play with 2 other friends and 1 bot.

Question 1: Do I have to level up the characters to use them at that level as a bot?

Question 2: If I equip the characters with items, do they stay equipped when I use one as a bot?

Question 3: Is it only the host's characters that get turned into bots?

Another thing worth knowing is that you can set the bot order in the options menu so if you only want to kit out four of the heroes you can make sure that the last hero will never show up as a bot
