5s | Some Swedish vehicles of the Cold War era |
---|---|
7s | are pretty hard to assign to a specific class. |
11s | People still argue whether the Strv 103 MBT should be considered an SPG or not, |
17s | and the Strv 74 is sitting in a weird gray area between light and medium tanks. |
23s | That said, the Stridsfordon 90 is clearly a standard Western IFV, |
28s | and we mean it in the best way possible: |
30s | Swedish engineers managed to create one of the best vehicles in its class, |
35s | and it can be considered the gold standard of modern IFVs in more ways than one. |
43s | The development of the Stridsfordon 90 began in 1984. |
47s | The Swedish Armed Forces needed a new APC |
51s | to replace the aging fleet of Pansarbandvagn tracked |
54s | carrier vehicles and armored cars, but there was nothing to pick from, |
57s | and the British Stormer and Scorpion didn’t meet the army’s requirements. |
61s | That’s why the decision was made to create a new vehicle from scratch |
65s | specifically for use in local climate and terrain. |
69s | The resulting list of requirements was pretty hefty: |
71s | the military wanted a high degree of crew protection from autocannon fire, |
76s | a lot of leeway for future upgrades, excellent mobility and transportability. |
82s | The main armament had to be powerful enough to reliably destroy modern heavy vehicles, |
87s | and the platform itself had to be suitable for a variety of vehicle types, |
91s | from an ARV to an SPAAG. |
96s | The project to develop the new vehicle was undertaken by a company called Hägglunds, |
101s | which is currently a part of BAE Systems. |
104s | After trials, Hägglunds received the green light from the military |
107s | to rework an APC into a full-fledged heavy IFV. |
112s | Their armament of choice was the 40-mm Bofors gun with its APFSDS rounds, |
117s | one of the most powerful weapons of its class at the time. |
121s | Swedish engineers also tested a variant armed with a 25-mm Bushmaster autocannon |
126s | used by the American Bradley IFV, |
129s | but ultimately decided not to develop this version any further. |
132s | Throughout the process, the military were adamant |
135s | about keeping the bar they set for the weapon system sky-high; |
139s | as a result, engineers had to rework the FCS |
143s | and other related components again and again. |
146s | The requirements for other parts of the new vehicle were just as strict. |
158s | The new IFV was designated ‘Stridsfordon 90’, or ‘CV 90’, |
163s | with CV standing for ‘combat vehicle’. |
166s | The Swedish armed forces accepted it into service in 1993, |
170s | with engineers clearing the very high bar set by the military with flying colors. |
175s | During trials, the new IFV consistently performed really well, |
179s | attracting the interest of potential overseas buyers: |
182s | the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Finland. |
190s | Currently, there are a few known variants of the CV 90. |
194s | For instance, the CV 9030, armed with the American Bushmaster II autocannon, |
199s | is an export version produced for Finland and other clients abroad. |
203s | The CV 90105 and the CV 90120 |
207s | are the result of two attempts to create a new light tank |
210s | by mounting a large-caliber gun on the Swedish chassis. |
214s | Cockerill, which was the manufacturer of the CV 90105, |
218s | also suggested fitting it with a new XC-8 turret. |
221s | In terms of firepower, the resulting vehicle would be on par with MBTs |
225s | which are considerably more expensive and difficult to maintain, |
229s | even though the vehicle obviously wouldn’t have the same level of protection. |
236s | Some CV90s were fitted with the RB56 anti-tank missile. |
240s | It uses the overfly top attack method: |
243s | instead of hitting the target head on, the missile detonates its warhead |
247s | a few dozen centimeters above the target, |
250s | firing its explosively formed penetrator |
252s | through thinly armored areas of the enemy vehicle. |
255s | Then there’s also the Luftvärnskanonvagn 9040, |
259s | an SPAAG fitted with a radar from Thales Group. |
266s | The CV90 is one of the most advanced and effective IFVs in the world |
270s | and vehicles of this series are waiting for you in War Thunder |
273s | at high ranks of the Swedish tech tree. |
276s | Do you enjoy using them in combat? |
