[2021] World of Warcraft News and Development Updates

With so much to keep your eye on in the World of Warcraft universe, we know it’s not easy to catch every social post or forum reply. To help you stay on top of it all, we wanted to take time to share a quick summary of the latest news and the developments we’re focused on for both Shadowlands and Classic WoW.

The team is currently most looking forward to two approaching updates: the Overlords of Outland content update for Burning Crusade Classic, and the 9.1.5 update for Shadowlands.

On September 15, Overlords of Outland will go live worldwide at 4:30 p.m. PDT, bringing back some of your favorite quests and raids from The Burning Crusade.

Meanwhile, in Shadowlands, we’ve rolled out a number of hotfixes as we prepare for the 9.1.5 update, including a change to give you more Conduit Energy daily, along with much more.

On the 9.1.5 PTR, a wide array of changes and quality-of-life improvements are being added and tweaked in real-time, more will be going live over the course of this week, and we welcome your input.

Legendary Raids Return to Burning Crusade Classic

The latest chapter in the Burning Crusade story brings with it a host of new allies who need your help, including the Ogri’la and Sha’tari Skyguard factions, which offer new daily quests and rewards. Additionally, new features will help you collaborate with your fellow adventurers, such as Guild Banks and the Group Browser.

At 4:30 pm PDT on September 15, two additional raids will go live simultaneously on all realms around the world. These raids each serve as home to two of Illidan’s powerful lieutenants:

Serpentshrine Cavern, where champions will descend into a watery lair to slay the twisted Lady Vashj.

The Eye within Tempest Keep, where you will infiltrate the heart of a crystalline fortress to end the madness of the corrupted Kael’thas Sunstrider.

Additionally, the Burning Crusade Classic Arena Season 2 kicks off bringing new weapons and armor to earn.

Road to the Shadowlands 9.1.5 Content Update

Last week, we deployed a number of hotfixes in preparation for some more significant updates coming with the release of the 9.1.5 content update.

This update will usher in the complete removal of the Conduit Energy system, but in the meantime, we’ve rolled out a hotfix to change the refill rate of Conduit Energy from one per day to 10. This change makes it easier for players to swap Conduits more often.

More is planned to be deployed in the live game this week. One of the best ways to stay on top of hotfixes is through this continuously updated post here.

 Players can get hands-on with what’s to come by logging in to the 9.1.5 PTR. At the moment, we’re focused on testing updates to gearing up alternate characters and the experience in Torghast. Here’s a look at some of the most recent PTR activity:

Notable 9.1.5 PTR Changes

• Increased the drop rate of Shards of Domination.
• Significantly increased the amount of Soul Cinders awarded from Layers 8–12, Maw Assaults, Tormentors of Torghast, and Command Table missions.
• Players who reach 80 Renown can purchase a Broker Mark of Distinction for 500 gold in Oribos that can be used on an alternate character to instantly grant the character up to Renown 40. (Cannot be used above 40 Renown.)
• Players can now purchase versions of Korthian Armaments that create a piece of gear for specific slots.
• Acquirer Ta’gosh in the Hall of Curiosities now sells a Gateway Control Shard letting you activate the nearest Demonic Gateway.
• The new customization options announced for Highmountain Tauren are coming to the PTR in the future.

Torghast, Tower of the Damned

• The weekly cap for Soul Ash and Soul Cinder has been removed, now allowing players to collect as much as they need or want.
• Repeatedly completing Wings now awards the full amount of Soul Ash (up from 20% after the first clear).
• Repeatedly completing Wings now awards the full amount of Soul Cinders (up from none after the first clear).

Competition Renewed in Shadowlands Season 2

The Mythic Dungeon International (MDI) returns with its global competitions for its 5th year, pitting the best Mythic Dungeon teams in a head-to-head race to the finish line. This week, MDI is back with Group C, the last bracket of the eight teams competing for two spots to qualify for the Global Finals!

Shadowlands Under Development: 9.1.5 Content Update

The Evolution of Creative Content in World of Warcraft

Over the last few weeks, artists and writers across the WoW team have updated a small number of old quests, art assets, names, and dialogue that we identified as outdated and inconsistent with our values as a team. These updates are a relatively small part of a comprehensive, company-wide effort to improve the WoW team and Blizzard as a whole, but they’re important to us as developers.

In early August, we set up internal channels where the WoW team could share feedback on content that doesn't represent who we are as a team today. During this time, we also gathered a great deal of feedback from players on practically every aspect of the game. The player feedback influenced many gameplay improvements we’re working on for patch 9.1.5, and our internal feedback identified some in-game content that is inconsistent with our goal of building an inclusive and welcoming game world.

In a game that has thousands of art elements and a word count in the millions, we recognize that these updates will amount to very few total changes overall. Nonetheless, we believe these changes are worthwhile. World of Warcraft is meant to evolve over time, and every day, new players from every walk of life and every corner of the world experience our in-game content for the very first time. As a team, we want the world they see to stand as an expression of our talents and principles.

Goofy jokes and occasional mature innuendos are part of WoW, and probably always will be. Still, we want to remain mindful of whether certain elements of that world are welcoming to all players. In short, we want our jokes to be inclusive and not punch down.

Occasionally, when determining whether to adjust content, there can be circumstances that further complicate our decision-making. For example, some of the art that populates our world is often re-used throughout the game. To be certain that we don’t have any instances in which this art appears in a way that is not respectful, in some cases, we might opt to replace specific elements entirely. It’s important to us that we ensure Azeroth is the best place it can be for everyone, and we will continue to improve our processes when it comes to this kind of decision-making.

We also want players to be able to express themselves through their characters, so we don’t intend to change existing player looks or cosmetics. Instead, we want to ensure that we're offering a wide range of options for players to represent themselves. This work is ongoing alongside our development of new content and features. You’re going to see more of it soon in 9.1.5, and in updates to come—and where applicable, in WoW Classic as well. An example of a post-9.1.5 improvement is the creation of an incubus demon, which we can add to places where succubus models currently appear. We're also planning to make the incubus a glyphable option for Warlocks when they summon that classification of demon.

As WoW continues to evolve and grow, we’ll keep discussing, reviewing, and acting on this kind of feedback. As always, we’re immeasurably grateful for your input, and we hope you keep it coming.

The Mage Tower Reopens with Legion Timewalking

With the introduction of Legion Timewalking in the 9.1.5 content update, Azeroth's champions will be able to enter the Mage Tower again. Check out the forum post to learn more details.

Updates to Area-of-Effect (AoE) Abilities

A new developer's note was published on the forums covering some changes to select AoE abilities. These abilities are no longer maximum target capped and instead deal reduced damage beyond 5 targets. Visit the post to learn more details.

Additional Nightborne Character Customization Options

Due to ongoing feedback from the community, the 9.1.5 PTR is introducing to Nightborne females an option for adding a glow effect to their hands. Male Nightborne will have this option added to the PTR in a later build for testing. Join the discussions of this new option on the forums.

9.1.5 PTR Notes

The latest notes for the 9.1.5 PTR have been updated with the latest additions to the next content update. Here are some of the highlights:

• In 9.1.5, we're tuning select encounters in Legacy raids to ensure that they can be completed by solo players.
• In this latest PTR build, we're testing some new class tuning and PvP tuning.
• 6 new cosmetic boots are available in the Trial of Style world event. These new boots have a unique look for races that don't usually wear shoes and can be purchased with Trial of Style Tokens.
• Several emotes have been adjusted, removed, and added. You can view the list of changes in our latest 9.1.5 PTR Notes.

Eternity’s End PTR Now Live

Class armor sets are making their return in Eternity’s End, and this time, you’ll obtain them from three sources: bosses in the new Sepulcher of the First Ones raid, the Great Vault (via all activities – raiding, Mythic+, and PvP), and from the forthcoming Creation Catalyst. In Eternity’s End, you’ll also discover a new Runecarving power that lets you harness the effects of your covenant Runecarving power in conjunction with an existing Shadowlands legendary to slay your foes or heal your allies. The Legion Timewalking Bonus Event Has Arrived!

Players will be able to adventure into six of Legion’s dungeons to reap new rewards all week during this week’s Bonus Event. Your character and items will be scaled down to a power level fitting for the challenge at hand, but bosses will yield loot appropriate for your regular level. Timewalking dungeons also have a chance to drop items that usually drop when you run them on Heroic difficulty, and you’ll earn reputation with a faction that is interested in the dungeon.

In addition, you can also complete Timeworn Keystone dungeons to earn powerful loot, as well as take on the challenges of the Mage Tower, available only while the event is active.

The new year has begun and with it a new slate of updates and developments for Shadowlands and WoW Classic. Burning Crusade Classic will soon see a new update including the introduction of Black Temple and Mount Hyjal to the raiding scene.

Shadowlands: Eternity’s End content updates continue to be tested on the PTR, making way for the introduction of a whole new land to explore—Zereth Mortis—and a brand-new raid dungeon—Sepulcher of the First Ones.

Eternity’s End PTR Updates

Development continues on the next content update for Shadowlands: Eternity’s End, where players will be able to step into a new land—Zereth Mortis— and face Zovaal, the elusive Jailer and ruler of the Maw in Shadowlands.

Sepulcher of the First Ones Raid Testing Continues

Raid testing continues in the Sepulcher of the First Ones with testing on Dausegne, the Fallen Oracle, Skolex, the Insatiable Ravener, and Artificer Xy’Mox on Mythic Difficulty. Players have also been able to test the first wing of Raid Finder difficulty.

Shards of Domination to be Disabled in Select Content

With the release of the next content update, Shards of Domination will be disabled in Zereth Mortis, the Sepulcher of the First Ones raid dungeon, in all PvP, and in dungeons. Shards of Domination will still work as before in previous Shadowland zones, the Maw, the Sanctum of Domination raid, and Torghast.

Tazavesh, the Veiled Market Dungeon Testing

This eight boss mega-dungeon is currently in testing on the PTR and will be available as two dungeon experiences with the release of the content update in Heroic and Mythic difficulties—Tazavesh, the Veiled Market: Streets of Wonder and Tazavesh, the Veiled Market: So’leah’s Gambit. Players will also be able to engage in this content as Mythic+ dungeons.

Class Set Design Updates for Demon Hunter, Warlock

Additional updates to the upcoming class sets in Eternity’s end continue to be discussed with a focus currently on the latest changes to Demon Hunter and Warlock class sets.

Burning Crusade Classic Phase 3 Release Schedule

The next content update for Burning Crusade Classic, The Black Temple, will be available on the week of January 17. The following week, on January 27, both raid instances (The Battle for Mount Hyjal and Black Temple), as well as a new daily quest hub, will be available worldwide. Players can now get a first look at the development of Black Temple and Mount Hyjal and the upcoming changes to this additional content.

Update on the WoW Community Council 

With the start of the new year, we wanted to provide an update on the WoW Community Council and the progress we are working toward as we continue to review the over ten thousand applications we’ve received. We are working hard to give all applicants fair consideration as we determine the next wave of invites. Updates specific to this will be shared once things are finalized.

The team has hit the ground running in 2022 with the Eternity’s End PTR. The WoW Community Council’s impact can already be seen as they have helped push along some new conversations on the PTR forums by asking how Shards of Domination will change with the patch along with pushing to know more about the tentative raid testing schedule for the Sepulcher of the First Ones. Additional topics are actively being discussed and posts will be made accordingly whenever details are finalized.

The current activity and releases in WoW Classic have led to a few updates there as well:

• Discussions on the difficulty of the Black Temple/Mount Hyjal raids
• Changes to the Gnomish Battle Chicken trinket

Shadowlands: The Eternity's End Content Update Goes Live February 22!

The next World of Warcraft: Shadowlands Content Update is drawing near. Prepare to step into the brink and face Zovaal, the elusive Jailer and ruler of the Maw in Shadowlands before he rewrites the very rules of reality.

With the help of the Primus, you'll be able to step into a strange new land —Zereth Mortis. Meet new allies—The Enlightened—delve into the runic and lyrical language of the automa and engage in the campaign to push back the Jailer's forces before he reaches his end goal within the Sepulcher of the First Ones.

Shadowlands Season 2 Ending Soon

The end of Shadowlands Season 2 is around the corner. The current season of Shadowlands PvP content will end at 10:00 p.m. PST on February 21, and the current season of Mythic+ content will end with the start of maintenance on February 22.

When introduced in Legion, the Mage Tower challenged players to conquer unique solo class-specific encounters. Legendary Belt of Unity

Those completing Chapter 7 of the Zereth Mortis campaign should be getting the Belt of Unity—a new Legendary belt empowered with your covenant's Runecarving Effect. Complete the campaign and become Revered with the Enlightened faction to gain access to the Memory of Unity, allowing you to craft the new covenant swapping Runecarving Effect on a different armor slot or help your other characters get an Enlightened Legendary right away.

Cross-Faction Instances Preview

Make frenemies of your enemies when you party with players from the opposing faction! New Dark Ranger customizations are available for Night Elves, Void Elves, and Blood Elves upon completing the “Cleansing Lordaeron” questline, and Hunters will receive the Dark Ranger armor appearance. Log in now to complete the quest and give your characters a fresh appearance.

• Fated Raids: Sepulcher of the First Ones
  • This week, bosses in Sepulcher of the First Ones are empowered with increased difficulty and a special affix. Loot drops are upgraded to a higher item level.
• PvP Brawl: Shado-Pan Showdown
  • Step into Tiger's Peak Arena and race for control of a center control point to activate one of two bosses. The first to kill the other team's boss wins!
• Timewalking Dungeon Event: Cataclysm
  • While this event is active, players level 50 or higher may access a special Timewalking Dungeon Finder queue, which scales players and their items down to revisit past dungeons from the Cataclysm expansion.
• Hallow's End
  • Hallow's End celebrates the break of the Forsaken from the Scourge. Fun and mischief reign as the Innkeepers of Azeroth give treats, and tricks, to those who ask.

  • While this event is active, Arena Skirmishes will award Honor at an increased rate. Will you answer the call to battle?
• PvP Brawl: Warsong Scramble
  • Do you have a flag? Warsong Gulch has always been the scene of an epic capture-the-flag battle, but what happens when you can capture your enemy's flag without your own at base? Find out when you step into this PvP Brawl.
• Timewalking Dungeon Event: Wrath of the Lich King
  • While this event is active, players level 50 or higher may access a special Timewalking Dungeon Finder queue, which scales players and their items down to revisit past dungeons from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

Beginning the week of October 31:

• Torghast: Chorus of Dead Souls
  • Dead souls swarm within Torghast, Tower of the Damned!
• Fated Raids: Sanctum of Domination
  • This week, bosses in Sanctum of Domination are empowered with increased difficulty and a special affix. Loot drops are upgraded to a higher item level.
• PvP Brawl: Cooking Impossible
  • Nomi is hosting a Pandaren Chili Cookoff in the Valley of the Four Winds between the Alliance and the Horde! The first to bring Nomi all of the required ingredients wins.
• World Quest Bonus Event
  • While this event is active, completing World Quests awards bonus reputation with the appropriate faction.
• Day of the Dead
  • During Day of the Dead, people gather in graveyards to celebrate with and cherish the spirits of those they have lost. One can find festivities in the cemeteries of any major city, where celebrants cook, dance, don costumes, and more!
