As it says in the title, the new update has me now consistently crashing after every couple of missions, and taking me to a screen saying 'hardware failure'. Is this something that might be fixed in coming patches, or do I have to let go of playing Warframe for some time until I upgrade my laptop?

Are you running Dx12 with an AMD card? We're currently investigating new crashes related to those.
The current workaround is to switch back to Dx11. That should fix the issue till we have a proper fix.

Actually no. My laptop is a bit old and only uses dx11. No AMD card installed. I think the laptop hardware may just be a bit too old to play with the new graphic mechanics.
Ah, in that case did you try turning off Volumetric Fog Quality?
It's a new setting for the new tileset. Turning it off should give you some performance gains.
