The benefit of collapsing Poland into the European nation is that it allows those captains to move between a wider variety of ships. Also, with all ships within this "nation" you have the ability to mount the national flag in-place of the European flag. Head to the exterior tab, hit flags, scroll down to Naval Flag and select the Polish / alternative flag. This will replace the European standard flag while still allowing you to mount 1/2 additional flags. This is also applicable to the Commonwealth and Pan-American nations too.
