ID.me has been verified and supported by the DOD and VA in the US and by the same branch in Canada and multiple other nations.
I have been connected to them since before I retired from the Navy and TBH, I feel they are more secure than a lot of other sites.
Of course this is up to you and optional, but considering we have no way to actually officially verifying military service other than this, I'd say that it is necessary.
