s in my youth I was a traveler my plan was
s to visit the entire a foundation but a
s dramatic injury put a stop to that a few
s years ago one of my more memorable
s adventures from my youth involves an
s enterprising Terraria by their name of
s emka who I met one Kip in pin she was
s trading various traditional trinkets
s from her homeland many of them depicted
s a dark figure with long indistinctly
s limbs
s it was the car he as a period of six
s weeks during kif where the Sun doesn't
s rise in the frozen north of Terraria it
s is a period of festivity in celebration
s but also of solemnity and reverence it
s is said that the dark weeks and when the
s spirit world passes closest to
s Foundation and it is at this time that
s the car he comes to prowl the story goes
s that the car he will take children
s specifically children who do not listen
s to their elders and drag them to the
s spirit world never to be seen again
s Unger and I talked a long time about the
s car he and the sacred tarry ceremony
s meant in part toward the spirit off I
s concluded that I simply had to see it
s for myself
s and invited myself to stay with them Kai
s and her family during kiff I was simply
s trying to fully understand an important
s cultural event it had nothing to do with
s the fact that uncle was and still is
s quite beautiful upon my eye my arrival
s in Terraria I was struck by a few things
s firstly I'd never felt such cold in all
s my life I was very glad for the first
s uncle brought with her to greet me at
s that port secondly I soon found out that
s my limited toe area wouldn't get me very
s far however it would improve over the
s season but every conversation was a
s challenge finally own curse words had
s done nothing to prepare me for the
s depths of the darkness it felt somehow
s darker than night there's something more
s imposing about it almost like it tugged
s to the edges of your vision soon we
s arrived at the settlement however and
s the lamps that hung from every available
s hook rope or corner help to keep the
s darkness at bay
s the lamps were astounding the locals use
s simple dyes and special powders to color
s the lighting elements so the entire
s settlement was bathed in a multicolored
s glow boom Khaled me to a gathering of
s people around a bonfire and we sat and
s watched the proceedings together I
s assumed that Herrera used the myth of
s the car key as a way of scaring the
s children into behaving but the entire
s community engages in the rituals meant
s to keep it away with an almost
s frightening earnestness even the oldest
s and wisest members of the community seem
s to believe that the car he is a real
s threat that doesn't mean the car he
s ceremony is an entirely stoic of that
s however we sat in a circle around the
s elders and listened to tall tales of
s spirits and men there was an exchange of
s handmade gifts and our works as a way of
s showing appreciation for loved ones many
s of the adults in the group were wearing
s whimsical hats fashioned from the spoils
s of a long kiff hunting trips and singing
s songs one man wearing a giant set of
s antlers sang a beautiful haunting song
s about a type of creature known as 'not
s ich natty car apparently creatures so
s ferocious and dangerous that they are
s the only things capable of killing the
s kind it was at this point that the
s lights began to dim I saw a shape
s approaching from the darkness the
s stories and songs began to fade away I
s looked at UM kur for reassurance but she
s had bowed her head and was whispering
s something under her breath I have to
s admit this whole thing was starting to
s get everyone around me was bowing
s towards the shape and whispering I
s decided to follow suit and duck down I
s began to see some features of the shape
s as it approached the bonfire
s it seemed humanoid in composition but
s had great big red eyes imposing horns
s and a gaping more it's slunk and
s naturally towards us not making a sound
s my fear soon gave way to shame though as
s I realized the shape was in fact a man
s in a suit furry thick and with a
s terrifying mask but a suit too
s nonetheless
s umka looked up at my face which had gone
s quite pale and stifled a giggle
s at this point the rest of the group
s raised their heads and arms and began
s chanting something I couldn't understand
s the man in the suit danced around the
s fire with strange jerking motions the
s ceremonial suit is a representation of
s an ax teak the idea is that 'no teak
s terrify the kahi so hopefully the suit
s will trick it into leaving the village
s alone the light shone with fresh
s brightness and the chants got louder and
s more fervent a carafe was passed around
s containing strong wine and don't
s remember a great deal after that point
s the next morning I woke in home cos
s family hut under staff er of blank and
s fur and blankets the warmth made it
s difficult to emerge from under it but a
s powerful first which overpowered my
s comfort when I walked into the central
s room her mother and father and Nola and
s our nak were sitting by the fire staring
s a part of something that smelled amazing
s they turned to me with warm smiles not
s fir'd me a mug of warm tea and a box
s wrapped in colourful paper I took a sip
s of delicious tea thanked her for the
s gift and opened it it was a beautiful
s hand-carved bone knife made by enola
s herself the craftsmanship was
s exceptional and the blade was amongst
s the sharpest I'd seen I still keep in a
s drawer by my pet surely after EMKE
s herself came in from the cold trailing
s snow and mud on the rug she was dragging
s a knapsack full to bursting with herbs
s and plants
s it seems she'd been out to the local
s store house for some essentials she
s accepted a bowl of stew from her parents
s and we settled him to enjoy breakfast
s together much of the rest of my time in
s Terraria past like this we would spend
s our time relaxing in the warmth of the
s family Hut for the day then at regular
s intervals we would venture out to the
s bonfire to sing dance and drink wine the
s strange thing about having no sunlight
s is that there's no way to tell when one
s day ends and another begins
s time begins to lose meaning and it's
s easy to become disorientated
s after some period of time could have
s been week maybe two my perception of
s things started to warp the darkness
s started to feel more immense and
s oppressive the lights felt like there
s was somehow less effective and how best
s to describe it but the sky seemed to
s throb and swell in the corner of my eye
s it was during this period where stranger
s things started to happen we received
s word that some of the children in a
s nearby community had gone missing
