No it doesn't require it, it's strongly recommended though. Just like Ark. Performance will be impaired by running on a platter. No crashes. just halts/stuttering when it's having to load data from the slow device.

To troubleshoot the crashing, go read the Bug Report/Support forum section. Post a thread there with the required information.
