Did someone say Unity 2018? Yes, they did!

Not really, but yesterday we switched to Unity 2018.1 (not too many issues so far), so we shall see.

Light radius makes a big performance difference and torches have a descent radius.

Well, we do know they were upgrading to Unity 2017 for some performance and other reasons (like DX11 and Vulkan support).
Maybe they hit some snag that only got fixed in 2018, or maybe a feature worked better.

I agree it is good they're pushing up to the newest. Means they'll be able to use some additional/newer features if they want/need.
Even if they don't make use of 2018 features in A17, it will set them up nicely for optimizing and potentially using some of them in the future without another engine upgrade.

Wow! They're really running for the beta release I guess! :steamhappy:

Or causing an extra year of bug squashing to do the engine conversion :2016imnotcrying:

I don't care either way (this isn't a complaint), they can stay in alpha/beta forever; as long as the game gets updates once in a while I'm happy
The way I see it, they say they've got it now, great. That means they won't spend the next year coding around Unity 2017 quirks to then have to change things if they want to convert later (since it is done).
I am totally guessing but it probably went something like this, convert to Unity 2017, get things working or nearly so, decide try Unity 2018 before spending too much time on any issues that might be 2017 specific (especially if fixes or large changes in those areas occur in 2018). Since most stuff worked, yeah, go 2018. Since they were in the middle of an engine update anyway it would be the time to consider that as an option (as they apparently did).

I'm sorry, but everything you just said is wrong.

It's absolutely posssible to optimize code, in just about every language. Best practices are suggestions that should work well, but that doesn't mean a particular best practice produces the fastest execution, or the smallest memory footprint, or any other thing you might be optimizing. It also doesn't mean that you picked the best algorithim or data structure or framework for a specific case.

And then there's the case where the developer just needed to get a feature to work and didn't use a best practice. Or the case where there simply isn't a best practice because you're doing something that few, if any, developers have done before.

If your education taught you that you can't do better than best practices to make software run better, your teachers did you a disservice.

Aah man, you're one of them nutters that have self-diagnosed yourself and know EXACTLY what is wrong with you before the general practioneer have even had a look at you. I know your type, well I don't, but my parents have regaled me with plenty stories of you people that I can spot you a mile away.
Please, for your own sake. Don't. It only serves to make you look. Stupid.

As if I or other software engineers don't have a thorough discussion which Data Structures, Frameworks or Algorithms and.. Oh yes pretty much how everything else should be done BEFORE we even start programming. In fact. We do most of the work before we start programming. So.. There's that.

No software engineer in their right mind would think they're the super genius of all super genius or better than the thousands of people that have gone before them. Sorry. You, my good Sir, need to wake up to reality.
- Fair warning: It ain't pretty.

But, thank you for the laugh.. I will be able to laugh my ass off every time I remember this for the next few days.
Insulting trolling post. For all your insults his reply had more facts than yours. Although you have done a very good job at being insulting and violating the rules so I will award your effort appropriately.
