Most mods are just un-commenting the bandit code that already exists in the client. It's been there since Alpha 14.

So far, Bandits are expected to have their own POI's. Which will basically be like the current POI's with sleeper zombies, except it will have active bandits.

The AI probably won't be that much different except that they will be trying to shoot you instead of slapping you. Probably a couple will be melee types as well. TFP has stated that they want the bandits to have the ability to "duck and cover" behind world blocks, so it will be interesting to see how that works out if they manage it.
There will also be random packs of a few bandits wandering around, and probably a heat attraction system for those groups. (but not like the current scout system)

Beyond that, I don't feel like they are going to have any extra automation.

They’re bandits. They are by definition robbers. I don’t think they’d be called bandits if they weren’t going to come after your stuff. But then again, it sounds like there won’t be any storms brewing in Storm’s Brewing, so part of me doesn’t know what to think anymore. I do know that bandits aren’t on the roadmap for 2.0, so we have a long ways still before they come to pass.

I agree it would make things interesting, and immersive. You know how Rick Grimes just leaves piles of food and weapons in the middle of the street, to come back to whenever? That’s right, he doesn’t. It’s easy enough to imagine the implementation of an economic heat map, where the game detects a buildup of valuables in the containers in an area and spawns a bandit scout to check out that buildup. I would also use a similar system to make herbivorous animals come after your crops. It’d add another layer of gameplay, even if bandit AI is little more than ‘zombies with guns.’
