May* need to start with a fully clean game between each major update. I at least never had to. But there are some people who do, and in general it's just recommended to as a preventative measure.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... When in doubt, full refresh.

If James' suggestion of clearing the registry doesn't do it, follow this, which basically includes removing the game itself and all other files such as those in app data on top of clearing the registry:
