Are traders even worth it?

I think you aren't mentioning the other options. You also aren't factoring in the money you received in payment, the increase in reputation with the trader, or the fact that the quest may have reset the POI filling it completely with loot again.

Go ahead and refrain from doing quests if you don't think them worth it. Lots of people do traderless playthroughs so it's definitely possible but it is also viewed as a type of challenge since doing the quests are, in fact, still worth it.
