As many may know, in Anno 1800, the Northwest passage dlc begins with "Lady faithful" requesting your assistence in finding her Husband "John faithful", who embarked on an expedition to find the northwest passage. She also tells you that the admiralty had done almost nothing to find him, after they disapered. When we get to the arctic the inuit help us find the two ships of "John faithful", the "HMS Hades" and "HMS Styx" ("Styx" is one of the rivers in hell in greek mythology). The ships had been left behind and the expedition took the life boats loaded with supplies with them. Almost all of them froze to deat, starved or were eaten by polar bears. We find "John faithful" and 2 of his men with the help of an airship, half crazy and dead. It is alos hinted that they resorted to cannibalism
The historical background is the "Franklin expedition" lead by "John Franklin". As in anno his wife also pressured to mount rescue operations, which were also downplayed by the Admiralty. They also left behind their ships (The "Terror" and the "Erebus" (Means Darkness in greek)) They also took their lifeboats with supplies with them. Unlike in anno, everyone of them died. (Most likely to the cold, skurvy and it is speculated that polar bears also played a role in some deaths.) The expedition also resorted to cannibalism in their insanity.
So, the expeditions are very alike, from the events on it and even the very "uplifting" names of the ships. In my opinion its very cool how they adapted real history so perfect into the game and still didnt just copy everything, but instead took history, changed a few details and made it fit into the game.
(Side note: If you want to read more about the franklin expediton and like horror, i recommend "the terror" by dan simmons or the tv series with the same name)
