The devs said on livestream that only a small percentage of players want it. I'm sitting here thinking that would raise 1800 from 10/10 to 11/10. The devs give us dozens of cosmetic buildings and ornaments to make our cities look beautiful but there is no time to use them or you risk falling behind to AI. So basically you are forced to choose between making a non-beautiful city or turning off AI. I would like to play with competent AI but also have time to build the city in the way I want it to look...

Edit: Forgot to add, when it gets to the point where you are managing dozens of islands across 5 regions, pause would be a huge QoL improvement.

Heya, splitting my reply in two parts:

1 - personal view

While I don't miss such an option, since I'm generally playing rather slowly and have been playing Anno games for long enough now to know the core mechanics, I'm never against additional settings or options. I don't think Anno necessarily needs one, but if that means a better experience for some players and people new to the franchise: Sure!

2 - Anno team view

There's by no means a "this doesn't fit to Anno" stance on our side. While always complex, 1800 is the first Anno game that goes even further with multiple simultaneous regions that require your attention. Up to this point, it just really didn't seem to be necessary to include such an option.

The way the game, or more specifically the engine is set up, everything is calculating in "ticks", e.g. the game needs to be running, be active. It's a real time strategy game after all. An active pause, however, would allow players to do actions while all of the game's processes are paused completely. That's simply not something our engine for 1800 supported. We did add a slow-mode option, however, that should provide a bit more breathing room if the game enters a stressful period.

We're by no means ruling out "active pause" for any future projects, when we have time to update our engine to support such a feature (plus, solve open questions like: what's the situation for multiplayer?). After all: We're always happy to see more players enjoy our games!

Thanks for the insight from a technical POV. If active pause isn't an option because of the reliants on ticks per action taken, wouldn't it be possible to just slow down time by a lot more than the current 0.25, say 0.01. This would not pause the game of course and if you leave your game running overnight would still not be a good idea. But it would at least take the constant feel of pressure from players, especially newer ones.

I believe there's a mod that does that and comes with a few downsides because of the underlying system explained above. It's not just slowing down gameplay, but also your interaction with it.

The "slow speed" we implemented basically is a compromise, since slower speeds worsen the user experience.

Or just slow it down to real time, or 1 min per sec, or something like that; that would be the same thing as a pause. It looks beautiful but it's no fun having to leave my planning because of some fire in another region, or an expedition, or whatever. Plus there are so many controls to learn and production pieces to optimize it's impossible to keep up. Like the other guy said, about 10 hours in the game goes from amazing to "this is too much like work" to "screw this, I'm going to play Need for Speed Rivals just so I can relax".

Hey, as I wrote above, we're aware of the sentiment you (and others) shared, but due to the technical limitations, this is nothing that will be implemented for Anno 1800.
