I just thought how cool it would be to take the "islands in the ocean" gameplay and adapt it into a different aesthetic, that would basically allow the same gameplay loop, but with different visual theme.
- Hinterlands. The "ocean" is untamed rough wildlands, the "islands" are the flat clearings and the "ships" are travelling merchants, soldier patrols, rangers etc.

- Sahara. The "ocean" is the desert dunes, the "islands" are oasis settlements and the "ships" are caravans

- Andes. The "ocean" are mountain passes between the "islands" of flat outcrops.

All of these could be used as settings for early historical games, as well as for far future "colonization of alien worlds" theme. Just a cool idea.

Some very cool ideas in here! The idea of an oasis as an island in the dune sea is definitely one that has popped up before during our own discussions as well. Though, to be fair, a lot of cool ideas are thrown around and never end making it into a game during development :)
