I was given the advice to do the campaign in order to learn the game before sandbox mode, but I am finding all the "Lord so and so says do this, and Madame what's her face needs this ASAP." I am still trying to come to grips with the simple mechanics and am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all this stuff I have to do at once. Is a regular game any more relaxing haha? I just want to play a chill city builder, not run around all over the map fulfilling a bunch of requests. Perhaps this is the wrong game for what I was expecting? Any advice is much appreciated.

The campaign does a good job at slowly letting you explore all features of the game, so, I'd personally recommend at least playing the first few missions. And don't worry too much about all the missions. Basically none of them are time-sensitive in any way. Focus on building your settlement(s) first and foremost, on learning the mechanics and how to make money. And then fulfill the quests one by one whenever you feel like it.
