Steven, do you remember The Library from ArcheAge? It was such a memorable open-world dungeon—a massive book cast down by the gods. Players would grind, engage in PvP, and explore its many levels. What made The Library special was how it combined open-world exploration with instanced gameplay. Inside, players could interact with a podium to choose an instanced level (1–30). Each level was identical in layout but hosted separate groups of players.
Why did the developers opt for this setup? Instanced dungeons offer better performance, allow more players to participate simultaneously, and still preserve the open-world elements of risk and reward. It was a brilliant balance. If you wanted more PvP action, you joined a level with higher player activity. If you preferred a quieter experience, you picked a less crowded one.
I think Ashes of Creation should take a page from The Library. Designing most open-world dungeons this way would ensure better performance, accommodate more players, and still deliver all the exciting dynamics that make open-world dungeons so engaging.**
