• How much time do you typically spend on character creation?

 • What are the tools you like to have available when you’re building your character?

 • Do you focus on race/class synergy, looking good, or something else entirely?

UPDATE: Greetings friends - thank you all again for taking the time to join in on this discussion! After putting together a recap for our team, check out some of the top notes you shared with us below:

Customization Tools

Many players want to see a plethora of customizable options, and don’t want to feel limited when making their character.

Ex. Head-hair, eyebrows, facial hair, nose, eye, cheek, ear shape, makeup, and tattoos including unique race-specific options.

Ex. Ability to change parting, length, adornments and fullness for beards and hair, as well as color customization for hair, eyes, and skin.

Players agreed they want to customize or have many options for their character’s age, posture, body proportions and mass, height, muscle mass, and voices.

Many players expressed the desire for “defining marks” - things that make their character unique and stand out.

Ex. Battle scars (missing ears, burns, missing eyes), tattoos, piercings, and baubles.
Sliders

There were a number of players who expressed that they want sliders for character creation options.

Others shared that they do not believe sliders are necessary if there are enough preset options to choose from.
Time Spent

The majority of players felt that the time they invest into the character creation process depends on how robust the character creator is.
Race/Class Synergy

Some players expressed that race/class synergy dictates what they choose - for some, it is adhering to traditional fantasy roles and for others, it is maximizing statistical advantage and potential.

A few players expressed that their own personal character fantasy comes before race/class synergy.
While many people shared many wonderful ideas, there was one that stood out in particular:

Depends on the depth of the options. I recall spending about an hour on BDO per character, but I can easily pick a "good enough" option on games like WoW that have much simpler systems.

What are the tools you like to have available when you’re building your character?

This might be a hot take for the MMORPG community, but I don't really care what "tools" I have, as long as my tools feel fair. I feel more pressured to make the "right" character in complex systems, and I'll honestly spend more time on these systems out of obligation to have a respectable-looking character than I will out of the passion of creating something unique. I am totally fine with "good enough" systems; I'll be more invested in my armor than my face, anyway.

Do you focus on race/class synergy, looking good, or something else entirely?

Character fantasy drives me the most. I don't care about min-maxing or aesthetically pleasing character designs. This might be the tabletop RPG side of me speaking, but I'd much prefer having a character with the in-game tools (such as lore or ability augments) to breathe life into them than I would having a character that looks nice or has good racial synergy.

I'll be more invested in my armor than my face, anyway.

This was an interesting tangent that came up elsewhere as well! Some folks noted that if they like to get heavily detailed in the character creator, they also tend to like to have their helmet toggled off to show off their hard work - whereas others preferred for their armor to look coolest, so they seemed to care less about their face.

Sounds like you're more on team armor vs. team face?
