It will eventually lead to extinction, unless someone manages to figure out what's causing the phenomenon and stop it. ;) Although, you'll have to wait until the endgame is more fleshed out to get to the bottom of this (pun intended).
Probably something to do with the center of Europa, maybe a alien city activated and started something, maybe a creature at the center is doing something to the core.
