“Sound is 50 percent of the movie-going experience.”

This principle is epitomized by one of the richest and most recognizable audio libraries in entertainment history – that of Star Wars™. It’s not only the iconic scores, it’s just as much the sounds of a firing blaster, an igniting lightsaber, and a roaring TIE fighter that are firmly embedded in pop-culture’s collective hive-mind.

Honoring this legacy in Star Wars Battlefront™ II was key for the game’s release, and has been an ongoing effort throughout the two-plus years of content updates.

Adopting existing sounds from the Lucasfilm archives is, of course, at the foundation, but there are many creative methods an audio designer needs to utilize in transferring the soundscape of Star Wars into a video game. Often, to meet the unique additions and requirements of the interactive environments presented, the audio team needs to create – or recreate – a sound ...

If you’re a long-time player (or just generally observant), you’ve probably noticed how the implementation of non-human players – driven by AI (artificial intelligence) – has played a major role in the evolution of Star Wars Battlefront™ II throughout the year.

As we tend to talk a lot about the more, let’s say, tangible aspects of our game – be it new planets, heroes, reinforcements, that kind of thing – we wanted to take a moment to highlight the work of our coders and designers in this specific domain.

Hopefully, it’ll give you some noteworthy insight in how the AI operates under the hood, and why it ultimately allows our game designers to create awesome gameplay experiences and quintessential Star Wars battle moments.

The New AI in Star Wars Battlefront II – A Brief Summary

A big milestone was reached in early 2019 as ...

On March 26*, the Infiltrator reinforcement class is introduced to Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II. Infiltrators are highly skilled, tactical elite soldiers thriving on the hunt, equipped with weapons and devices suited for close-quarters encounters.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s in store.

The ARC Trooper – An Elite Soldier of the Galactic Republic

Advanced Recon Commandos, also known as ARC Troopers, were the elite soldiers of the Galactic Republic. They were often placed on missions too challenging for standard clones.

In Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II, the ARC Trooper wields two DC-17 hand blasters, a pistol carried by high-ranking members of the clone army. Making the ARC Trooper a lethal opponent in close quarters, the dual blasters are fired individually by pressing the triggers or mouse buttons.

The primary DC-17 can be charged up to deal out a precise Power Blast, as well. This Ability buil...

How do you recover from having your planet-destroying superweapon, well, destroyed, by a bunch of Rebels? You build a bigger, better, and more powerful one, of course. That’s exactly what the Galactic Empire did.

Death Star II spanned more than 160 kilometers in diameter, compared to its predecessor’s 120, and was equipped with 15,000 heavy turbolasers, 15,000 standard turbolasers, 7,500 laser cannons, and 5,000 ion cannons. It undoubtedly earned its space battle station label. While being built, it was held stationary in space above Endor by a repulsorlift field, created from the shield generator situated on the forest moon.

Despite being under construction during the Battle of Endor, its main weapon, the superlaser array, was fully operational. The Rebels could just watch flabbergasted as the armament powered by kyber crystals (the same crystals used for constructing lightsabers) dissolved their Liberty star cruiser during the combat above the Ewo...

With The Chosen One Update arriving on February 27, we’re not only getting a new hero in Anakin Skywalker, but also an update to how the clone troopers of the Galactic Republic are represented in Star Wars Battlefront™ II.

Along with an overarching re-implementation of how trooper classes are visually identified, the different clone trooper legions have also undergone a touch-up in the way they look. And with this update, we’re introducing the option to play as an armored clone officer, too!

These changes and improvements to the clone army tie into each other, so to learn about how it comes together, we’ve talked to Game Designer Christian “CJ” Johannesén.

Phase I and Phase II Clone Troopers

With the additions of prequel era characters and locations to Star Wars Battlefront II, the clone troopers were originally implemented with the idea of staying true to the point in time when they appeared on the St...

The flora and fauna on Endor is really something a little extra. Reptavian geejaws circle the air beneath the lush tree crowns, and Ewoks trek the forest floor and the settlements above – made up of huts, platforms, and walkways between the giant, Endorian trees. A place of beauty and serenity, no doubt, but the Sanctuary Moon has also seen its share of conflict.

It’s a good thing then that the Ewoks are fiercer than a first impression might reveal. The furry dwellers will dispose of any incoming threat by sounding their battle horns, releasing a small species of native fire spirits called Wisties, and fighting relentlessly with their spears.
