Im probably going to just keep this post updated on my ventures into trying to make bocw work, vs making new posts. If im completely honest, about 8h into my journey I sorta gave up hope that changing anything on my end would make it work, though, I guess if I dont at least try, I would have never known.
That out of the way, I would like to go over my experience playing the game so far.
First of all, on max settings, this game is FU***NG stunning! For the 10 or so minutes that I can actually play it for. Im mainly talking about the sp because I have no friends ;-; (On a serious note, none of them play this game rn so /shrug)
The zombies is pretty good, and I, personally, haven't noticed too many bugs with it myself.
The multiplayer, I have enjoyed, haven't unlocked the rw3(that might be the name? Its the sniper you get at lvl 25) yet, but I suspect that when I do, ill come to like it even more. As you probably guessed, I, for the most part, am a sniper. Its what I enjoy doing. Using the first sniper you get(No clue what its called) has been fun, but oof hitmarkers are annoying, and there have been some cases where I felt like I For sure should have hit someone, but missed? Mabey its cause im bad, or because I play on a mobile hotspot(Long story, but its my only option, has been for years, and is unlikely to change). Side note, Im usually rocking 250-300 ping in games, but for some reason on BOCW im getting 125-175. Its odd, and mabey its just tripping, but thats something to note I suppose.
EDIT: After finishing the campaign, I can confidently say it was FU***NG AMAZING! While the game DID still crash after disabling windows defender/firewall/and virus protection, it did WAY less frequently. But for real if you havent already, play the sp story, take your time, and enjoy it. It is worth it. Not only does it graphically look stunning, but the story it tells is top notch imho.

Onto the reason that im actually making this post. Holy. God. Damn. the crashing is so god damn frustrating. I can confidently say that if younger me had gotten this game, I would not only have destroyed 14 controllers and at least one of my monitors, but every window in my apartment as well. What makes it worse is that, in its current form, there is no rhyme or reason to it. there is no "Do X to crash your game today!" It just closes. Just like you hit the X on the top of notepad. But its bad enough that even if I load up the game, and leave it on the main menu, it crashes after a while.
I have tried every single "Solution" that ive found on this(and other subreddits) but noting seems to even effect it in my case.
My system specs are as follows
- i7-8086k(No oc, but I do keep it undervolted)
- Zotac Trinity 3080 (upgraded from 2070 a few hours after release, but crashing still persisted on the 2070)
- 16gb ddr4 2666mhz memory
- Corsair H100i cpu chiller
- Corsair rm850x psu
Ill also note, that with the exception of Neon Abyss, I havent had a single problem running any games up till this point. Neon Abyss is a special case, cause its beyond broken xD
Here are a list of steps ive taken to try and remedy the crashing, All of the following were done on both my 2070 and 3080 (I swapped them out and repeated the same steps)
- Run normally (resulted in crash)
- scan and repair (4x)
- uninstall and reinstall to a new drive
- uninstall and reinstall to original drive
- launch with safe mode
- launch with safe mode then restore original gfx settings
- underclocking my gpu (-125mhz clock -50mhz memory)
- underclocking my gpu (-225mhz clock -75mhz memory)
- removing the `Player` folder from documents folder (rip my sp progress)
- only turning off dlss
- only turning off nvidia boost
- only turning off all ray tracing settings
- turning off both dlss and nvidia boost
- turning off dlss, nvidia boost, and rtx settings
- disable everything in the startup tab of the task manager
- cold boot (10m system was off for) and load straight into the game, nothing else running
- checking for windows updates
- disabling fullscreen optimizations (This is never helped me personally before, but for the sake of trying, I tried it.)
- changing dpi settings to application (This is never helped me personally before, but for the sake of trying, I tried it.)
- underclocking cpu
- undervolting cpu (this is how my cpu normally is. But I undid the undervolt as a measure to get bocw to stop crashing)
- disabled all overlays (RTSS, Discord)
- tried installing and running an application called ISLC (user u/TheKronorium98 had luck with that HERE)
- rolled back to previous gpu drivers
- clean installed new gpu drivers
- changing the game priority
- adding -d3d11 to the startup flags (i read on one of these posts that someone had luck with this one)
- limiting the game fps to 60 (after being on 144 for a while, this is yucky)
- limiting the system to 60fps
- damn near every game settings combo you can think of
- disable GPU scheduling
- Re-seating Ram
- deleting cache
- Unplugging one monitor, then cold booting and retrying
- (Inside the NVIDIA control panel) Disabling G-sync
- (Inside the NVIDIA control panel) Disabling DSR (ngl, I don't remember ever turning it ON, but I had it set to 2x. Its probably something I would do tho xD)
- (Inside the NVIDIA control panel) Setting power management mode to both Max performance, and optimal power
And things ive tried since posting this.
- completely disabling windows defender firewall
- completely disabling windows real time protection. (Please don't ream me on this. I know the risks of doing this.)
- (Small thing of note about the two above, After disabling them, I had, what felt like at least, the longest play session so far, but ultimately it still crashed. It could very well be a placebo, or windows pulling a note from Ubisoft's server playbook, but who knows. Ill do some more testing with combinations of these two and items from the above list. Either way, thx u/QuinSanguine for these two suggestions, I would not have thought about checking these.)
- (Can confirm. doing the above(Plus having ISLC running. No clue if it actually helped any, but I downloaded it, and had it running with stock settings. apparently it "cleared" whatever 80x so I guess it helped) Definitely improved the crashing situation, but it did not eliminate it. I do not recommend doing the above, I did cause im big dumb and cod is fun xD, but be careful if you do.)

Past all of this, I have also noticed a few bugs with the game.
First of all, in the settings, `Screen Space Reflections` keeps getting set to low. Even though whenever I lgoin I set it to High
Next up, ive notice a few places in the sp mode, ive seen floating vehicles(slight above the ground)
Also on the sp, on the mission where you lift the mainframe off the ground, if you save and exit(for me the game crashed :/), I used all of my bow ammo, and had my revolver left with full ammo(the one from the locked cage). But when I reloaded into the game, the bow had max ammo and the revolver had none. Weird, but whatever.
Next one, on the same mission as the one before, when I started getting lifted up with the mainframe, It glitched tf out with my movement. I was sliding all over the place(like off of the mainframe through walls and stuff)
Another one is ive seen with the zombies extraction, the zombie counter said 48 zombie kills left, I killed a BUNCH of zombies(afaik, all that had spawned in up to that point), as I had them trained up, and I mowed them down with the stoner, and it knocked two zombies off of the counter :o
Also, in multiplayer, the hits with the sniper feel off? idk, I mentioned above---
EDIT: Another bug ive found with the sp is sometimes when you go to resume a campaign mission, it will just sit on the black screen with the oscilloscope symbol thing in the bottom right corner, but the game is still playing, but you cant play. For instance, after a crash, I came back to the game, and hit X to resume, After skipping the cutscene, I spawned right after I entered the bathroom, and the German police were banging on the door. I could hear them banging and telling me to open the door, but i couldnt do anything. Once here(This has happened twice now) you can pause, and because of the semi-transparent background of the pause menu, I could see that I was in the bathroom, but couldnt do anything. On hitting reload checkpoint, it does the exact same thing, but you cannot pause anymore. the only solution ive found is to kill the game from task manager, or right clicking the bocw icon on the taskbar and hitting close
If anyone has any solutions that arent listed here, feel free to lmk and ill try them out, and update the post. Hopefully some dev or someone at 3arc sees this and lets us know whats up. I get that game dev takes time, and you can only work on so much at once, but it would be nice if they had a timeline or some guide as to where their head is at in terms of what has priority over what, or even if they had a channel in their discord where they acknowledge that X is a bug and that they know about it.
