What makes challenges a great addition to games is when they are implemented as a side activity to gain a boost in XP or gain a reward but when you take Challenges and make them the sole way of progression in a battle pass your gunna have a bad time.

Here is the list of issues with a challenge only battle pass.

No matter how organic the objectives may seem and or designed to be, being the only way to progress these Challenges SCREAM at the player, Complete me to get your rewards. This is the primary issue that sprinkles down to the rest of the issues at hand.

No matter how much someone plays the game, or aids their team, or even scores high on the roster if he isnt completing challenges he is getting ZERO progression towards that battle pass.

Proper play style and even team victory takes second seat to challenges and farming to meet those challenge quotas, need to get all the essence after all to unlock that border.

When a players main objective is to complete the battle pass there is less incentive for him to play, when i complete battle pass challenges for the day I actually feel more inclined to do something else since all my other pass challenges are done except for the daily's and all other progression is not as rewarding as the battle pass itself. When I purchased Paladins battle pass it was XP based and i felt way more obligated to do good in a game since the more XP i got the faster i got through my battle pass, here that is not the case.

There are probably some more issues so if your thinking of some I didnt post them below, also use the word Pineapple to show that you actually read the post.

I feel like someone somewhere thought this was a good idea because theres no way beta testers would have not mentioned any of this. Hell im sure some of the devs mentioned this, but someone somewhere said, "Nah, It'll be fine....But it wasnt fine"

Hello. Battle pass designer here. My goal with the battle pass is that players should be able to unlock everything through about 10 hours per week of normal play, in other words, without having to do anything special. I'm keeping an eye on the numbers and also playing through the pass myself to make sure this is the case. I've already reduced by half the amplifier and hive challenges for this reason, and in future seasons the game will award challenge progress to the whole team if anyone captures an amplifier or defeats a hive. Next season will also feature fewer of the sort that requires a player to perform a situational action, such as the "damage enemies with spike plants" challenge.

If we see players exhibiting degenerate behavior like what you're worried about, or if we see them taking more than the expected time to unlock challenges, then I'll be dialing back challenges accordingly.

It might be 10 hours of play per week. But split evenly throughout the week. Meanwhile someone like me can play even 16 hours/day on my 2 days off but none on the others. Iā€™m literally screwed.

Fair point. Thanks for pointing this out. I can't promise any update to this pass but I'll bear it in mind when designing future passes.
