The Byzantines were the direct descendant of the Roman Empire, and between 900-1500 AD their armies had armours reflecting the grandeur of their empire & its invincibility, the Roman military virtues, the Divine Protection and Welfare. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/EsL-AboXUAAj4Y3.jpg

Scale armours called Klivanion, chain mail and padded, lamellar and even plate armours were used. The combination of these types of armour resulted in the production of a wide variety of defensive weapons. The most elite unit of the Byzantine army was the Varangian Guard which usually accompanied the Emperor on the battlefield, used as shock troops.
