Greetings Slayers!

Welcome to the Focused Feedback thread where we present a featured topic for you to share your thoughts on in a centralized fashion. Before each Focused Feedback, we conduct a poll where you can pick from a selection of topics and the one with the most votes will be the topic we cover. This thread is dedicated to all your feedback and serves as a centralized hub for the developers to gather your responses.

This is the last Focused Feedback for this cycle. We will resume in the weeks following the next major update. We thank you for your active participation and we look forward to have more of these productive discussions in the future!

Our topic for this week: Springtide Event

The Springtide event is drawing to a close and the developers are eager to hear about your thoughts on the event as it is the first of its kind to land in the game. This event introduces the first-ever alternative activity that goes off on a tangent from the usual hunt and slay formula and your feedback can help shape these activities moving forward. Today's questions are split into two categories and were prepared by Phoenix Labs developers u/C4_PHX, u/CreatureTech-PHX, and u/bunheadwhat. Special mention to u/TopherooJack for taking the initiative to create their own Focused Feedback thread when the event first came out as you will see some of their questions were recreated for today's Focused Feedback. 😃

Springtide Event

  • Did you find any part of the event unclear or difficult to understand? If yes, how do you think could the information be better delivered?
  • What were your thoughts and expectations with the Pufflehop Rescue, the aesthetics and theme of the event, and the Springtide items? Were those expectations met?
  • Which stage of the Pufflehop Rescue was your favorite and least favorite? How do you think could the experience be better improved?
  • What are your final thoughts on the Springtide event as a whole? Would you participate in it again in the future?

Alternative Activities

  • How do you feel about having activities that depart from the core Dauntless concept of cooperatively hunting behemoths? Do you think it has a place in this game?
  • What other type of game activities do you look forward to see in the future?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below. Organize and format your feedback well and you may just receive a response from the devs themselves! 😎

Submissions related to the topic will be removed and redirected here. The comments will be displayed via contest mode which hides comment vote score and displays them in a randomized order to give each feedback a chance to be seen.

Thank you all so much for your feedback! I'll be bugging devs to get in here and answer some of the questions that pop up.

This was our first foray into what a non-Behemoth style activity would look like, and we're excited to dive into the responses. It was definitely a learning experience, and all your comments will greatly help us going forward.

I apologize but I've been collecting my feedback before this post was created and I wasn't going to take more time to reformat it. I've divided my feedback into things I liked and things that needed improvement. Let's start.

Things I liked:

  • Refreshing Hunt Mode: New hunt mode that doesn't focus on killing behemoths is certainly refreshing. I hope to see more hunt modes (or non-hunt modes too) that can provide some meaningful rest from hunting behemoths. Each part of the hunt is different enough and causes me to use cells that I never used before.
  • Event Hunt Shop: The new hunt mode is accompanied with a shop to trade in your currency for items
  • Pufflehops: They are adorable little creatures though it'd be nice if I got to see them in Ramsgate especially for a limited time event.
  • All Hunts Contribute Carrot Chips: You can get carrot chips from all hunts. This is good so that all slayers can at least make some progress towards an item if they aren't running the event hunt.
  • Incentive for Public Hunts: This hunt mode encourages players to pursue public hunts since it's incredibly likely you'll gain more coins.
  • Efficient HP EXP Grind: I think Pufflehop provides very efficient Hunt Pass EXP gains especially for slayers who haven't reached the end game.
  • Quest Jumpstarts Grind: The quest provides a jump start in your grind although not by much. I think it'd be better to offer a temporary Carrot Coin boost to get players to actually start playing the hunt mode (at least initially).

Concerns and other things that I think need improvement:

  • Time used for spawning?: In the Pufflehop and Styxian portions, a few seconds is always wasted at the beginning waiting for them to spawn. Was the 95 second interval intended to compensate for this?
  • Poor Egg Visibility: Regarding the egg collection portion, if the objective of Slayers is to collect as many eggs as possible then mobility cells are important. If the eggs are then covered by the shrubs then collecting the eggs can be a struggle as your blazing through the island. Sometimes I don't even realize I passed an egg until I see the "Press E" indicator on screen. If such an idea is to be executed at a later event hunt, I'd like to see the glow of the items grow very strong as you approach them. Alternatively, you can simply increase the radius by which the "Press E" indicator is active.
  • Styxian Hitboxes: The Styxians, since they are so low to the ground, have a hitbox that can make it difficult to hit at times. I'm pretty sure they are the only fauna that have this issue to me.
  • Styxian Respawn Rate: I also think that the Styxian respawn rate is too slow given how much faster it is to kill a Styxian compared to getting a Pufflehop into the cage. I often find my hunt party killing a wave with about a couple seconds before they start respawning. Personally, I think it'd be nice if respawns occurred automatically when the number of Styxians is few.
  • Bosun Markus = Pufflehop Enthusiast?: This is a minor grievance but I'm not sure why Markus Boehr is chosen to be the NPC of an event shop outside of proximity to Ramsgate spawn. If there are going to be future event hunts (which I believe to be the case), all event information and event shops should be handled by a single unique NPC. Markus Boehr has his role defined in the game to provide tonics and consumables to slayers. It'd be nice to introduce some lore about an NPC who's excited of all the different events that Ramsgate gets to participate in. Perhaps a Social Coordinator (like /u/CreatureTech-PHX) for Ramsgate.
  • Plat items in event shop: I'm not sure why an event shop indicated with a Carrot Chip icon includes plat items. I'm sure you could have placed the plat items in the main shop and advertised those items to Slayers when they log-in.
  • No Pufflehop Armor Transmog: I think this is a missed opportunity especially on a limited time event focusing on these adorable creatures. Perhaps there wasn't enough time but I believe some armor transmogs would be worth the purchase.
  • No use for excess chips: When all items are purchased, there is no reason to continue participating. Perhaps some "Pufflehop Cores" that contain consumables, Rams, Bounty Tokens, or even Vault Coins would be worth a slayer's time.
  • Incredibly Fixed Experience: There are some minor differences between each Pufflehop run (island type, location of pufflehop pen) but none of them make a meaningful difference in the overall experience. This makes the game mode boring rather quickly.
  • Plat Carrot Chip Boosters: The Bunny Ears in the shop (I forget the name of the item) is a plat Carrot Chip booster. This leaves a sour taste in my mouth even if there are a finite number of items in the shop. In fact, one could argue that getting a booster for a finite number of items is even worse because those who purchase the booster can't even get the mileage they want out of it. This also reduced the chance I purchased any of the plat items greatly.
  • Unnecessary Plat/Carrot Chip Division: All the items in the shop are either obtained only by Carrot chips or only by plat. This is a complete contrast to the Saint's Bond Contract event where every Transmog could either be obtained through grinding or through plat.
  • No excitement to grind: Outside of the napping emote, I never really found myself getting excited to grind for the items in the shop and I guess this is due to the "no variety between each run" item. The Saint's Bond contracts was completely different because the Transmogs were great!
  • No event webpage?: If I'm not mistaken, there wasn't a page wholly dedicated to explaining the event, the details, or any lore behind it. In fact, the first thing that pops up on a Google web search is a link to the patch notes. Perhaps there wasn't much time, but I find it a bit baffling that there wasn't a page for this as there was for the Frostfall and Saint's Bond contract events. The web page could have also served as a great advertisement for your plat items.

No need to apologize - this is great feedback. Thank you for taking the time!!

Even though some people didn't like it because it got old quick, I loved it!

Bunnies were super cute and herding them was amazing! And u weren't forced to do the pufflepop quest if u got bored with it. Since each hunt gave u 50 carrot tokens anyways, I got most of my items from the shop from farming Hunt Pass XP from Normal Trials.

The bunny ears are great, even though they cost platinum, and most emotes and such were cute too.

The only complaint would be mixing in Platinum based items with Carrot token items. This caused many people to accidentally buy Platinum items even though they didn't mean to. Thankful I got a refund, but there were few people from my guild/discord who were complaining about the same issue(accidental platinum purchase). I asked them all to try and ask for a refund.

Other than that, the non-platinum rewards frankly didn't look too good and were somewhat disappointing compared to the platinum bunny ears/plushie.

Awesome, thanks! Totally - you're not alone in the confusion between Plat/Carrot items. We hear that loud and clear!

Wow! So much awesome feedback already in this thread. Thanks everyone that is taking the time for your detailed thoughts and feelings on the event.

I wanted to pop in with reply on the event store containing both the event and platinum items in the same space and the confusion it can cause.

The intent was to have all the content in a single place so you could see all your cosmetic options at the same time and not require you to jump between two screens to see all the content.

We always want you to know what currency you're spending and the value that you're getting from spending it.

We're going to do better on the next event that uses multiple currencies to ensure it is much clearer what kinds of currency you are spending and showcasing the difference between earnable and purchasable content. We don't know what solution we will take yet and we may end up actioning multiple solutions to make this feel better and super clear.

Thanks again for all the feedback,

C4

Did you find any part of the event unclear or difficult to understand? If yes, how do you think could the information be better delivered?

I noticed a lot of my teammates did not understand the herding mechanic at first. I ran into a few groups where they tried to slice the bunns. Likewise, a few times teammates didn't understand where to go when that phase started, which left others waiting for the full 30~45 seconds. Other than that, things were fine!

What were your thoughts and expectations with the Pufflehop Rescue, the aesthetics and theme of the event, and the Springtide items? Were those expectations met?

Bunnies are one of my favorite animals, so to see a plethora of bunny-themed items available was an absolute delight! I just caught the tail-end of the event after coming back from a hiatus, and upon seeing the banner in the Springtide shop I knew exactly what I had to do.

My two big complaints about the event items would be:

  1. The flare is a little hard to see in the sky. I was sort of hoping it would have some sort of faint colored background to it, but it's just the eyes and nose -- which is cute, don't get me wrong! But compared to other flares it's a bit tricky to see in certain lighting. I'm aware the flares show up on your compass, but it just seems a little weird to work for a flare that you can hardly see.
  2. Half of the items being paid-only was a bit disappointing. I don't mind games having paid event items, it's only natural for a F2P game, but I do agree with others that maybe it should've stayed in the premium shop. I actually didn't realize they were paid-only at first and was scrambling to figure out how to earn them. Maybe next time instead of including them in the event shop, you could have a button that redirects to the premium shop with some text saying something like "See More", or maybe section off the premium items with a divider?

Also, the emote was adorable, I just unfortunately didn't start the event early enough to get the coins needed for it (which is my own fault).

Which stage of the Pufflehop Rescue was your favorite and least favorite? How do you think could the experience be better improved?

I enjoyed the egg hunt the most! Ironically, the combat part was probably my least favorite. Half the weapons in the game aren't really made for fighting smaller sized enemies. It also felt a bit inconsistent how much damage needed to be done before they would die. Sometimes their animation would look like I defeated them only to see them stagger back up.

What are your final thoughts on the Springtide event as a whole? Would you participate in it again in the future?

I enjoyed it! I'm glad I came back from hiatus at this particular time. I would definitely do it again in the future!

How do you feel about having activities that depart from the core Dauntless concept of cooperatively hunting behemoths? Do you think it has a place in this game?

I think any time a game can break away from its typical loop and offer players something new helps refresh the experience. I definitely think you guys should look into more alternate activities!

What other type of game activities do you look forward to see in the future?

I can't think of anything in particular, maybe activities that could feature more than 4 players at a time? It would be kind of neat to see larger groups of players participate in events -- be it non-combat alternate activities or maybe large, "raid boss" style 8-man hunts.

Keep up the wonderful work! Thanks for all the fluffy bunns this Springtide!

Thanks so much for playing the event! Lots of great feedback, especially the thoughts around the store.

Also, people were slicing at the bunns?! (;╹⌓╹)

This is delightful.

  • Did you find any part of the event unclear or difficult to understand? If yes, how do you think could the information be better delivered?

No, it was very straight forward.

  • What were your thoughts and expectations with the Pufflehop Rescue, the aesthetics and theme of the event, and the Springtide items? Were those expectations met?

I wasn’t sure what to expect but it came off as a very cute and gentle event. The items felt a bit too simple , and the platinum ones didn’t seem to be worth their price. For items I was expecting much larger & louder bunny ears and possible a bunny backpack (introducing back cosmetics). The overall look and feel was very calm and warming thru out the items and rescue.

  • Which stage of the Pufflehop Rescue was your favorite and least favorite? How do you think could the experience be better improved?

Favorite was using a high speed running build to collect as many eggs as possible , I guess that part was the most exciting. Least favorite was the bunny herding due to awkward player collisions pushing each others bunnies away. I get that is there for a little challenge but the distance they are turned away from might need to be tuned down a bit / less receptive to other players. The ending part with the styxians could use a little more excitement as well as they don’t feel like a threat to the bunnies at all. They spawn extremely slow and die in a couple hits while not attacking the pen at all.

  • What are your final thoughts on the Springtide event as a whole? Would you participate in it again in the future?

It was a simple and straight forward event that everyone could easily complete and if they didn’t want to do the event they could earn currency from regular hunts , that’s great. The event though does get boring very fast and while it’s great to have an entry level for everyone it would be nice to have a higher difficulty one with giant styxians for players who want a challenge.

Alternative Activities

  • How do you feel about having activities that depart from the core Dauntless concept of cooperatively hunting behemoths? Do you think it has a place in this game?

Yes most definitely. After playing this game a while without much end game content it’s up to the player to make their own fun , which can get very boring with the stale offensive and defensive meta. Having other activities to get further lost in the game and have fun is always welcomed. But If they are to have slaying involved , include a difficult (and optional) portion for those who want a challenge.

  • What other type of game activities do you look forward to see in the future?

Use rams to go fishing for bounty tokens , snowball fights in December , the tavern having some use and ram riding.

Thanks for the feedback, and for playing the event!

It wasn't that appealing. I bought all the items needing carrots without stepping into the event.

Ah interesting, so you earned the carrot chips by going on regular hunts? (That's good to know -- we wanted to give players who wanted to go on regular hunts but still wanted to celebrate Springtide a way to do so as well)

It was fun collecting eggs, chasing bunnies and fighting the lizards, but it was something I was able to finish out in a day. Really. And tbh I did use some of my platinum on the ears because I thought they were cute and it was a really good move in your side to make it a way for me to double my carrots, but by doing that I did the whole event in a day playing with my friend.

I don't think the bunny lantern should have been for platinum. That should have been for carrots. And the flare really doesn't look like a bunny. It's just 3 dots 😔🤷🏼‍♂️

But now that this event is going to be over, what are we supposed to do with these left over carrots? We should be able to exchange them for premium bounty tokens or something at least. We did do the work and earn them. I don't want 2000 carrots forever for nothing. Let me at least make a carrot cake for the turtle 😂

Thanks for the feedback, and for playing the event!

As for the remaining carrot chips, I guess it depends on if we bring this event back again in the future...

Most personality items you can only load up ONE cosmetic into, and emotes - the things you ought to be wanting to have a variety of to use in social interactions, you only get four at a time. And switching any of those cosmetics requires a solid 30 seconds of menuing, so any time you want to swap a cosmetic for any reason, you have to spend an inordinate amount of time going through your menus to change.

And then stuff like emotes and hunt arrivals are represented in your menu at a glance not with a name, but with an abstracted frame of animation. This means if you've got a lot of emotes or hunt arrivals, you have to menu over to an item to get its name instead of knowing what it is right away unless you've intimated yourself with what each frame of animation represents.

There's this rather significant feeling that new flares, banners, emotes, hunt arrivals, etc., are not worth anything because they will never be used. And they will never be used because if I want to use them, I have to chew through a long menu process every time I want to change. Much easier to just get one set you like and stick with it forever.

Got it -- will share this among the team. Thanks again to both you and Russta for the feedback!
