I have been playing Dauntless (casually) for a little while now (about a year). I am a decent player but not what I would call “Good” when playing with others that have the crowns, etc. I do well enough in escalations (10-50) that I do not die a lot at all. I’ve been considering branching out to trying heroics. The thing is I know I am not a GOOD player and I would hate to be the player that brings the escalation to failure. I really enjoy playing CB, WP, and Repeaters. Is there a level of reforging that is most recommended? I tried on private and well that was just an epic failure the couple of times I’ve done it.

I’m just curious if there is any reason to not try it and then if I am being carried too much to either not do it again or leave the heroic. I’ve not tried to queue for them before out of fear I won’t be able to do my part. Any advice?

Expert terribad here. This will go in the face of every piece of meta advice ever. I learned this out of curiosity on what the real entry barrier to Heroics is. In short, I wanted to see if it was accessible to players that struggle with the game for one reason or another.

Trials require a lot of learning moves. Hescas require the right build mostly.

  1. First bit of advice is to get lvl 25 in the given escalation tree.
  2. Start with Warpike, I did and started with right click spam as a test of "how bad can I be basically using 1 button?"
  3. Again, throw out meta, your goal is to get to lvl 80+ not to beat it in 10 minutes. You have more time than you'd think to get lvl 80, or even 90.
  4. Full facetank cells. Try to avoid armors that give negative, but it's okay if you get 1 or two.
  5. Two options, Bastion, or Iceborne. For this example let's go Iceborne, you can go from there.
  6. Koshai's Bloom is a must, since we're going lifesteal/Iceborne path and it's not bad on it's own so there's no reason not to.
  7. Ideal weapons are Millenium's End, or Parasitic Curse as they can both self-revive, bonus on Parasitic if you're with others.
  8. Weapon special: Concussive Payload (this is your oh I got hit way too hard I'm going to backup and heal to full health with 1 shot emergency)
  9. Recommended Endurance/Adrenaline +6 for damage, everything else facetank.
  10. Best facetanks Tough+6 needed, Sturdy +3 or +6 this allows you to mostly ignore the fact that you're being hit and can't dodge if your life depends on it. +6 Nine lives if you can, between Nine Lives, your weapon and defense you can potentially safely die 4 times to 1 behemoth as they recharge over time.
  11. Bonus: Helmets Agaric Canopy has +3 Parasitic built in AND defense slot. Prismatic grace (though it has medic so is better with others, you'll be good at ignoring behemoths while reviving with Sturdy) Agaric is best here for that bonus 5% life steal.
  12. Others if they fit, Catalyst is good period and works well with lifedrain or Aetherdrive tonic for spam Koshai's.
  13. Use Iceborne active+Koshais active to give a temporary life steal boost when hurt. Use your Concussive payload to instaheal to max this way.

That's about it, feel free to experiment, Bastion is same concept but with shield and maybe even a little safer due to some behemoths potential to 1-shot you even with the above. I'd recommend Iceborne though as you get comfortable in the face of behemoths and start naturally dodging harder hits and getting better. Getting lvl 80+ by spamming right click (or even 90) is surprisingly do-able. As you get more comfortable you start toning down the defense and slowly creeping towards more damage/meta, but don't worry about that at first.

While I agree with you on most of these, why Nine Lives? Nine Lives isn't very good.

You die less and allows you to die more. It'd be one of the first things where the second you beat it you go "Okay, it looks like I don't need that" and shuffle it into damage, or maybe you realize you do. For that one it's lvl 6 or bust though, lvl 3 is not good at lvl 6 you get an extra life every 5 min, and between that and weapon revive it gives you a lot of room for a lot of mistakes.
