Need help identifying an effect!

Hello friends, my buddy and I were running Frost Escalations yesterday and came across something I couldn't identify.

One member of our party was creating little crystal structures on the ground that seemed to function like Nayzaga quills, generating and firing electric orbs at the behemoths every few seconds or so. There were like 30 of them during urska just firing them everywhere and I've never seen them before. Are they an effect from an Escalation amp, or some sort of armor or weapon effect?
