I recommend taking some time first to look at the characters and their unique perks, because you need to unlock them first before you can try to get them on other characters. They are called teachable perks, which you can get at level 30, 35 and 40 on each character.

I recommend using the wiki, as it lists all the characters with their three unique perks: https://deadbydaylight.fandom.com/wiki/Perks

The reason why I recommend is that you might really want someone's specific perks, but it will take some time to level up the main character you play and the other character. Let's say you really love to play Claudette, but you like Dwights unique perks more, you level both up at the same time. It takes much longer before you can unlock the Dwight teachables than it would have if you just had picked Dwight from the start.

For beginner perks, Spine Chill[deadbydaylight.fandom.com] and Premonition[deadbydaylight.fandom.com] are good. Totems are an important part of the game, so I would suggest running Small Game[deadbydaylight.fandom.com] (it might take a bit to get the hang of it). For a healing perk to heal other people faster, We'll Make It[deadbydaylight.fandom.com] is a good one.

All of these perks are available for every survivor. Another good perk I recommend, you could use it instead of We'll Make It, is Kindred.[deadbydaylight.fandom.com] Kindred helps immensely when you are hooked and others get visual queues of where everyone is and if the killer is really close to the hook or not.

Otherwise, get used to the game mechanics first. It helps a lot sometimes when you try to hide during a chase in an attempt to losing the killer. Keep in mind, when you run, you leave scratchmarks (Killers can see them). I recommend when you try to hide, run in one direction and then walk into another, that can help to sometimes confuse Killers as to where you went. In the beginning, I'd also suggest to take your time to walk instead of run, so you can figure out where gens are located and start working on them. Use pallets primarily in an attempt to stun the Killer or when you want to gain enough distance to get away.

Which survivor have you picked as your first one? Because you do have their basic tier one teachable perks already unlocked.
