From what we've heard from GSG, their owners are hands-off and don't micromanage content direction.
That has been their historical stance, but recently they've been less noble. A particularly notable quote, after firing 17,000 studio employees and cancelling a bunch of projects with "low expected return":
“We know we need to be exploiting Lord of the Rings in a very significant fashion, and turn that into one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world,” Karch said. “And that’s obviously something that we’re going to do be doing. That’s a much better use of resources than some of the other projects that some of our teams have been working on.”
I think DRG has established itself well enough as a profitable enterprise and development model, hopefully it's safe from too much upper level micromanagement.
