I'm sure a lot of players tried to drill out gold or Nitra when first playing Driller. This seems like a natural assumption so I assume it was a deliberate move on the devs' part to not allow the Driller to do this. Did they fear it would make missions too easy? Or people would bring 4 Drillers to rush?
Sure, the Driller is handy, but it's a lot moreso for his own navigation than the team's. When a platform is placed under a mineral vein, a tunnel is lit up with a flare, or a bubble shield is dropped during a horde, you see direct benefit from these abilities. I suppose the Driller can drill tunnels for navigation around rooms, but the three others have navigational abilities that usually can ferry themselves. The only time it's really a guarantee the team benefits from the Driller's ability is when fleeing back to the pod. It's a fun feature, but almost feels cheesy that this is the Driller's "primary" role.
I thought the archetype of the Driller was supposed to make him the best at acquiring minerals, thus consistently directly benefiting the team, not just a personally helpful navigation tool. Even if it takes a specific upgrade at the cost of rock-digging effectiveness, I really wish the Driller could dig out mineral veins. It would save the team from a lot of tedium, especially with things like gold. If the devs are afraid of this making him too effective, then maybe it can be at the cost of some of his combat effectiveness so he's more of a specialist. Also, if they fear driller rushes, not only does this leave you without many helpful tools like the zipline and flare gun, but this only really directly makes Mining expeditions easier, as it's the only mission type where minerals need to be drilled for objective completion.
Pls make the Driller be able to drill minerals, I'm so bored of smashing away at Gold for two hours.
