[2023] Do the devs aggressively pursue legal action against fanart/fan games?

I am working on a fan game based off of the universe of DRG, and I'm curious if I can distribute it openly, or if I need to keep distribution to a torrent. I'm not using any in-game assets, and plan to release it for free. The only thing I'm using are the setting of the Space rig (with my own hand drawn assets), the characters, and a couple of voicelines (in text form, not audio).

I'm planning to have all 4 playable dwarves, mission control, Molly, Bet-C, Lloyd, Hack-c, and the Drop Pod as datable characters.
