[2022] Had the game gifted to me by a friend but it won't let me play

I got gifted Elite Dangerous by a friend on Steam. I went through the process of making an account on the Elite Dangerous website, linking my steam account etc. but it keeps telling me I need to purchase/redeem the game to play it. When I check my account on the game's website, there's nothing to redeem.
