I am trying to start my vanilla Elite Dangerous, but where the Launch button used to be in the Launcher, there now is an Upgrade button.
Is vanilla a thing of the past? Do I have to Upgrade now in order to keep playing?

You should be able to play on Base Elite, and on Horizons if you like! Update/Upgrade should simply update the game to the latest version.
