Will Oliver eventually be a skin in the game? We need that luxurious mane

If the people ask for it enough, anything is possible! It is a magnificent mane that many of us envy on a daily basis, and it would be amazing to do a diving header in Fall Ball with the power of the mane behind it.

Also which of the finales do you find the most frustrating?

I've only ever won the game once lol. It was on Fall Mountain. So naturally, I love that one.

I don't get to the finals super often, so when I do, I'm at my happiest.

Most frustrating round for me is See Saw though - I love the round... but I feel like most people don't understand how See Saws work lol.

For my hair I use Umberto Giannini products - they're all pink and say women's hair all over them, but it's a conspiracy, don't let it hold you back.

Hypothetically, having not thought about it before, I think they would have a rubbery exterior that tastes like nothing, but the inside would be similar to a jelly baby and be so delicious that you wouldn't be able to stop at just one...

hypothetically.

Where there any games that you were testing before the beta that you cut from the game? If so what where they like and why did you cut them?

We tried alot of things! For example, we had a level that was based on Minesweeper, where you had to move slowly across an arena that had several mines embedded in the ground. If you walked near one, a siren would light up above your head, and if you triggered the mine, the floor would explode and send you into the sky. We cut it because it wasn't that fun to be constantly blown into the sky (though it does sound fun, and there was a hilarious bug where your Fall Guy would be blown into the sky forever and never fall down...) and required players to move very slowly to creep around the minefield, which the theme didn't quite fit - it felt more like a scene from Saving Private Ryan than a Fall Guys round!

Will there be any way to Queue with friends

You can team up with 3 of your friends and matchmake as a team of 4 Fall Guys! When you played team games, the matchmaker will try to put your squad all on the same team where possible. If you get eliminated, you're eliminated solo - you don't qualify as a squad. Only one person can win in the final rounds though, so you will have to turn against your squad!

Why did you cut down the player count to 60 from the 100 that was shown in the E3 2019 reveal trailer?

Awesome question - I'll copy and paste u/FallGuysJoe's answer from a blog post he wrote earlier this year:

1. 60 players creates the perfect amount of chaos. When we first started working on Fall Guys we had to ballpark our player count based purely on what felt right to us, and 100 players became this talismanic number we decided to aim for. “100 players, 1 winner“ instantly gives players a sense of the mayhem they’re going to deal with, and two years ago was the standard for all Battle Royale titles (Fall Guys isn’t a battle royale per sé, but when explaining the game for the first time it helps to draw those parallels).

Once we started prototyping gameplay we quickly we found that players couldn’t really tell the difference between 50 and 100 contestants. Regularly we’d ask players “how many Fall Guys did that feel like you were playing with?” and their response was often twice as high as the actual number that were in-game with them. It turned out that we didn’t need as many players as we thought to create the crowds we wanted the gameplay to include.

We also began to find that 100 players made even our simplest levels too crowded and ultimately less fun. Players would lose their Fall Guy in giant bundles trying to fit through small gaps, and if we made our levels bigger they were too large and cavernous to feel cohesive. Once we reduced player counts to 60 we found the horde of Fall Guys still invoked all the craziness we wanted, but without any of the frustration and confusion that the extra 40 Fall Guys brought with them.

2. Better performance across the board. It also makes sense for us to aim to keep our player count as low as possible because a higher player count means more time spent matchmaking. We want players to have minimal downtime between Shows, and finding 60 players to play together have proved to be exponentially faster than finding 100.

On top of this we’re able to push both our networking and rendering budgets further with less objects on screen. At launch, players will be able to experience more accurate networking and more detailed visuals- 40% more in fact! (note, this number is made up by me and is in no way backed up by engineering or art teams).

3. More wins for everyone! Your chance of winning just jumped from 1/100 to 1/60! We want Fall Guys to be a game anybody can pick up and enjoy, and by reducing our player count slightly we’re able to get more players through those early rounds and ultimately give everyone a better chance of leaving with the crown in their hands. We want everyone to feel like they’ve got a fair shot at victory (yes, even you).

Ultimately we’re still in development and things could change between now and launch, but through extensive playtesting we’re finding that 60 Fall Guys strikes the perfect balance of chaos and fun. We believe it’s going to create the best experience for players when they get their hands on the game during closed beta, and ultimately when the game goes live this summer.

What has been the most difficult hurdle to overcome?

For me it's been designing rounds that are really fun for 60 players! We've tried a lot that just don't work at the maximum player count - for example, the first iteration of FallBall, the football round, was a full on 30v30 round, and meant that the majority of players would win or lose without ever having touched the ball. Ensuring that all players feel involved at this scale has been tricky but I'm really proud of the rounds we've got in there so far!

Why did you choose to release on ps+ at launch?

Sony were really enthusiastic about the game when we showed them an early version of it, and we felt that taking this route would help expose the game to a far larger audience than we could have reached on our own. Also, it's something that worked super well for Rocket League which has been one of our inspirations.

What has been the most difficult hurdle to overcome?

From a purely engineering perspective, it's been the networking. It turns out making a physics oriented game with 60 players is actually quite an undertaking!

Every level / obstacle has been a case of figuring out exactly how efficiently we can relay information to clients to maintain good server performance / networking throughput whilst providing a fun and responsive user experience.

Levels are often iterated on multiple times to improve performance over the course of their lifetime, and finding the perfect balance between design and engineering has been a fun and interesting challenge!

Some levels have been much more difficult than others (I'm looking at you Egg Scramble 😠 ) But it's been a fantastic challenge and we are constantly improving the experience however we can!

Lockdown has definitely made it harder to communicate between disciplines - issues that would have been solved in seconds in the studio become much more difficult when you have to organise calls and such, so we've had to adapt to that and ensure we're as clear as possible with our documentation to avoid unnecessary time waste!

Also, Get Your Own Back and 50/50 were my FAVOURITES as a kid :D we've watched them quite a lot for inspiration!

You can ALSO buy kudos packs from the platform store if you're running a bit short, but crowns CANNOT be bought. If you want those really fancy costumes you're going to have to earn them!

Outside of that we'll have a handful of costumes that appear as a 'pack' similar to our collector's edition pack. These can only be bought with real money, but represent a tiny percentage of costumes that are in the game. 99% of cosmetics can be earned just through playing and we don't have a paid battle pass either.

Since you guys are very active on social media & communicating with the fall guys community I think it would be an amazing idea to have something in place like having a super rare ultra skin for your wee character that can only be obtained by like winning a "fall guys clip of the month" or maybe the dev team can squad up for a weekend and if you get put into a match with them, they randomly can award people this ultra rare skin or something along the lines like that!

I think this would be another way to really drive people playing more and for longer knowing there's a cool wee incentive? Just an idea guys but would love to flex on other players if I ever got this skin 😝

Thanks for doing this. Been following for a while and really digging what you guys do ✌

I used to be totally obsessed with trying to earn Recon armour in Halo 3, so I love this idea. It's tricky though, as soon as you add an extrinsic reward to this type of stuff players can start to do it for the wrong reasons, and your whole community can end up just begging for the special armour the whole time (see old bungie.net for reference!)

Will there be another beta test before launch? I've been watching this game since it was announced.

For a real question, we see a lot of MXC/Wipeout/Takeshi's Castle references - how much of an influence, if any, did those have on the idea of the game?

There's another one this weekend! Keep an eye out on our Twitter for access codes, and streamers will be handing them out too! :)

Those shows all had a massive influence across the whole game. We're huge fans and we studied the shows all through development. You can see it in the textures on the environment; the art team did a great job making everything look like it's made from soft plastic, foam and crashmats! And you can see it in the Fall Guys themselves - much like gameshow contestants they are uniquely useless at everything they're asked to do, but they always get back up and keep on trying.

Any hints on what the new gametypes will be in the future? Even super vague?

Edit: ninja deleted reply 😥 I saw a lil bit of it as a phone notification, something along the lines of "we have some ideas for round where players..." and that's all I saw

Someone must have said too much

We have some ideas for rounds where players... [REDACTED]

Just stopping in to say I’m sooo excited for this game, have been since it was announced. And as hype as I am that its going to be free on PS+ I’d actually love to be able to support the devs, will there be other versions of the game up aside from the free PS+ version that I can buy? If not will there be some other way to support the game/Devs like a “battle pass” or something?

Thank you so much - we're blown away by the support! We don't have a paid battle bass (everything in the season reward path is free to earn!) though we will have a few packs of DLC costumes you can buy if you'd like. :)

Someone on discord said that the fall guy is a cake but then it was said on your twitter that it was a jelly bean. Is it both?

Also- Will you guys be adding more maps? And what are your favourite maps?

(It's a brilliant game btw!)

I like to imagine each Fall Guy is delicious in their own way :)

And yeah, we'll be adding more levels as we go! My current favs are FallBall and The Whirligig :D

With the huge population of players practically confirmed on the PS4 thanks to the PS+ deal, we PS4 players are in a good place. However, I'm wondering if there are any plans for crossplay with PC in the future.

More players is never a bad thing.

We're hearing the requests for crossplay loud and clear!
We just have to be careful right now to ensure that the big features spend time developing are the ones that benefit the game the most. Things like crossplay can be a huge thing for hardcore players (and those who are active on reddit/discord/twitter), but we need to make sure we're listening to the largest communities, not just the loudest.

Will this game have trophies and will they be easy or hard, on a scale from 1-10?

We have trophies and one of them is so insanely hard I don't think anyone will ever unlock it.

This year with quarantine and everything has sucked and I was beyond happy to see that Fall Guys didn’t seem to get delayed. Was production impacted in anyway by COVID?

( P.S. My uncle works at Twitter so if I get a beta key he said he’d totally verify your account on there)

We were set up pretty well to be honest. A lot of us work on laptops (crazy I know!) And Mediatonic was really helpful making sure everyone has what they need. Luckily the nature of our work can be done pretty effectively from home, but the social aspect is missed greatly and that was a blow. I think playing from home alone made this massive launch media blow up even more surreal tbh

Can you make the final game a bit different. There should be more games until there are 5 people left who can then fight for the crown. With 15 people at the last game is not of a goosebump moment

Due to the varied nature of the rounds, there should hopefully be a different amount of people in the final round each time - I've seen it go down to a 1v1 a few times!

I love the sound and music in the game. It does sound familiar like it is inspired by Splatoon. Would you say you were inspired by Splatoon and the catchy music and sounds? Or what was your inspiration for it?

Thank you! The music was composed by the ever fantastic Jukio ( https://twitter.com/jukiokallio) and had a whole lot of influences.

He'd know more than me where all the magic came from, but you can listen to our reference playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0lBELCk6zJ2jzvRGZMI1sO?si=16OYvQMiTlWibbY6pPIiOg

It's got a wide range from Japanese pop, to Drum & Bass and Glitch Hop - enjoy!

What is the Mediatonic favourite stage and why?

I'm sure we all have a different favourite stage but I think mine is Tip Toe - it's really fun to play, but it's so fun to spectate too. Watching people making decisions of where to go next is hilarious when they get it wrong and so satisfying when they succeed!

How often will the game receive new content

The honest answer is that we don't know! The game has exploded in popularity much more than we anticipated so all our plans have sort of gone out the window right now!

I can at least say that we've added a lot of QoL improvements based on beta feedback that should be coming hot on the heels of launch!
