If Steam says there was a 24 peak of 300 players, that correlates to the peak of concurrent players that day. It does not account for everyone that logs on to play the game daily, which is way way higher than 300.
Obviously it is still important, as that determines how long / short your queue will be when you are logging on, but there are way more than 300 people playing the game.
