Foreword: There's been quite some talk and hopes that the Ubisoft Connect announcement was indicating For Honor is confirmed to be Cross Play and Progression. Expectations should be tempered until more concrete information specifically about this game is announced regarding that, maybe in tomorrow's Warriors Den. I've seen this sub get too hyped up only for things not to materialize in the way they (we) thought. Best to wait and see than be disappointed later on.
Ubisoft Connect Announcement
Ubisoft Connect FAQ: The Ubisoft Connect announcement discusses the transition of combining Ubisoft Club and Uplay into something new. It will go live Oct 29 with the release of Watch Dogs Legion. There's a lot it discusses, but there might be some misinterpretation in the info that was presented. There's two things going on with what's said:
1. Supported games for Ubisoft Club to Ubisoft Connect (App, chat, friends, overlay, Challenges, points, etc.)
2. How Ubisoft Connect works in relation to Cross Play and Progression Supported games
It appears For Honor is being referred to for the first part and not the second. Ubisoft Connect:
"The first step in transforming the app into Ubisoft Connect will be with the all-new overlay. Ubisoft’s live games, old and new, will be compatible with Ubisoft Connect services and loyalty program. Some of these titles include Hyper Scape, The Division 2, For Honor, and Ghost Recon Breakpoint, with Rainbow Six: Siege being added in an update shortly after release," Ubisoft said. "Ubisoft Connect will also be included in all major upcoming Ubisoft games with Watch Dogs: Legion being the first to use its features on all platforms."
The in-game overlay will be renamed and redesigned, but will retain the features of the existing Uplay overlay. There will be some changes to how it all works, however: The chat and settings options, for instance, will be available from the Ubisoft Connect app, but will not be accessible through the PC overlay.
Ubisoft Connect will go live with the launch of Watch Dogs Legion on October 29. The existing Uplay desktop app will be updated to Ubisoft Connect by way of an update that will download and apply automatically."
To further add: All back catalog games' rewards and Challenges are being wiped (1000 games or so). The only games starting with new Core Challenges on Ubisoft Connect are the ones in the list people are citing as thinking it means also getting CPP. This is where the confusion lies and what needs to be clarified. This article talks about those games and the soon to be implemented Core Challenges. After reading that, one can see how things might have been misconstrued.
Cross Play and Cross Progression
The Cross Play and Progression FAQ referenced in the Ubisoft Connect FAQ was created to prepare Ubisoft accounts to be ready for that if/when it happens. However, just because they can doesn't mean it will. It specifically states, "We’re excited to announce that Ubisoft is introducing cross-play and cross-progression for select games."
Games like Watch Dog Legions, Hyper Scape, AC Valhalla are some of those selected games and have already been confirmed for that. For Honor and R6 have not, with the exception of the Ubisoft Connect announcement that might be confusing things. New games are receiving this support, it's not specified for the older ones (the list shown is for Ubisoft Connect supported games, not necessarily Cross Play and/or Progression supported games). This tweet by Ubisoft even states R6 isn't confirmed for Cross Play/ Progression and only the newer games are confirmed for it. That's not to say For Honor won't get it later, just not right now. It's far easier for new games to negotiate terms than it is for existing games to re-negotiate terms. It's not a solely Ubisoft decision, it's not their networks, even R6 game director has said this year "...this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony."
What does that all mean?
There's two different things the Ubisoft Connect announcement is talking about. Transitioning from Ubisoft Club to Connect doesn't necessarily mean it's also saying Cross Play and Progression will be enabled for those games. We also don't know if it's talking about Cross Play/Progression with only current and new gen consoles (which has been discussed). There's also the fact that it goes live on Oct 29 and next gen consoles don't get released until November. It's very unlikely current gen and PC are going to be Cross Play. It may happen later on, but I don't think this announcement was confirming it will happen anytime soon.
It's a matter of when Cross Play and Progression comes, not if. I just don't think this was announcing it for this game at this time. I could be wrong and hopefully more information comes out tomorrow to confirm anything, but until then, I wouldn't get my hopes up until it's explicitly announced. It's possible they may have tipped their hand for the game's future intent (it was already very likely), but I'm holding off on thinking this is any type of confirmation for here and now.
