65s to keep the anonymity to a certain extent

74s Before Fortnite Creative,
75s I wanted to be an interior designer.
78s Fortnite Creative was just something I picked up,

81s I didn't see it as an actual job or anything like that.
83s I just saw it as something fun
84s that became something that could actually translate into work.
87s It's kind of insane.
90s I graduated high school a couple years early.
92s It felt great, but at the same time,
94s I had no idea what I was gonna do afterwards.
97s I picked up Fortnite Creative as a hobby
99s and it turned into something more.
101s Creating really did change my life an my whole family's life.
105s It feels great to know that I can now give back to them
108s for all the times that they've supported me.

115s You guys have earned the biggest admiration, huge admiration,
118s from everybody here, you know, at Epic Games,
120s for what you've managed to deliver with the tools,

124s The mission of this Game Jam
126s is to sit down with a bunch of friends
128s and have a good time building some maps
130s that all of us enjoy playing and that we enjoy making.
133s We all have our different styles.
135s We're actually bringing that all together
136s and building some great content for, like, the whole community.
139s You guys are the pioneers of this.
142s We're here to build maps for Creative World Cup.
144s So, like, really what we want to do is talk through, like,
147s how you guys talk through sort of some of the ideas
150s that you're thinking about for your maps.
152s Imagine this sort of big junkyard wasteland...
155s -...sort of environment. -Okay.
156s We also had this, like,
157s scavenger hunt idea with, like, 16 players.
160s So, basically,
162s kind of like another parkour sort of, like, puzzle.
164s Okay.
165s I have the idea of a "One in the Quiver" kind of game,
167s like, "One in the Chamber,"
169s where everyone spawns with a Boom Bow that has one bullet.
171s And then, if they get a kill,
173s they're rewarded with another bullet.
174s I used to be on a swim team.
176s I guess I was pretty fast because one of my coaches
178s at one point had called me "Dolphindom."
180s And I guess I kind of just -- I like it and I stuck with it.
183s I just continued with it.
185s It's gonna be a three-level race.
187s Level 1's gonna be like KK Slider's avalanche,
191s except with the new balls.
193s So I did electronic engineering and after six months,
195s I realized I did not like it.
197s And right around then, Fortnite Creative came out.
200s I just started focusing a lot of my time into it.
204s After three months, I think I got noticed quite a bit.
207s And I can say I'm on here. It's been great.
210s We want to use the devices to open secret paths
213s and go with the world, coloring all the arena.
218s It's amazing!
219s The amount of people working on this
221s and putting their hearts in this and it's...
224s It's just mind-blowing.
228s I'm sort of like a perfectionist.
230s I can't start building until I have a solid idea set in place.
235s Quality of the quantity is my thing
238s and what is going to make you a better artist.
243s I really have a creative mind-set
245s that just brings to the table
247s things that no one's ever seen before.
252s Okay, so how's it going with turning your dream into reality?
255s I'm really sketching it out,
257s making the layout, scaling and stuff.
260s I started playing Fortnite back in May 2018
263s when some friends introduced it to me.
266s Then again in December, they introduced Creative Mode.
268s So this here is the parkour bit, right?
271s Yeah. That's where you spawn.
273s One year ago, I was sitting in high school
276s and I had no idea I would end up where I'm at now.
278s To move more faster, can we use the crystals?
283s Or we can use the speed boost.
285s The truth is that I was very happy creating maps at home
289s and never thinking it would help me transcend to this level.
292s But at the moment, I'm very excited about this adventure.
297s So what you guys have to do, pretty much,
298s is block off this so that eventually,
301s the storm will just kill everybody up on the top
304s and just leave the guys who are left down below fight it out.
306s That's good. Okay.
311s What we can do is force him to do a slide
314s and then you have the different levels,
317s in which they can get pushed to the side.
320s So basically, we're gonna make a giant circular junkyard...
323s Uh-huh.
325s ...and then, like, right in the middle is gonna be, like,
328s this massive incinerator.
329s Everyone would get to be a guardian once,
331s but then they'd get to be a prop three times.
332s Yeah.
333s And freeing a prop is more fun anyway.
335s I was getting nervous at first because I saw all these faces.
339s I knew those people, but I felt bad for not recognizing them.
343s But as soon as I met them, like,
345s "Oh, my God! This is this guy. This is this guy."
347s We were all, like, very close together.
349s I feel like we're a family. It's pretty cool.
357s We have the center, which is outlined by this river.
361s Okay.
363s The battle field area would basically be the skyscrapers.

368s When I first walked into Game Jam, I thought,
371s "This is unbelievable!
372s I would've never thought of this being so big."
376s And I'm just so excited to see where this is going.
380s So what's the primary objective to get the jetpack, correct?
384s Exactly.
385s You basically use the jetpacks to build the rocket.
390s We will have 12 hardcore type paths...
395s Okay.
396s ...where you get the jetpacks from.
398s That's awesome, man.
404s The basic idea is a capture game mode.
408s We have four different teams of four players.
410s I was in college.
412s I wasn't really happy with what I was doing.
413s I kind of needed a break.
415s So I was working at a warehouse packing boxes.
418s Day to day. Nothing special and nothing fun.
422s But then I found Creative Mode and I got hooked
425s and I've been playing ever since.
426s And I'm really enjoying it.
428s The Lama Island will be disconnected from the bridge.
431s In order to get to that island, your team has to work together
436s in order to clear the path for, maybe,
439s activate three pads or something that creates a bridge.
445s The big difference from, like, me and being here at Game Jam,
448s I used to make all my projects solo.
450s But now, this is like a huge community we've got here,
453s which is a good thing.
455s It's good to, like, listen to others.
457s I was looking for a job when Creative Mode came out
460s and I saw an opportunity there.
462s And I just started making maps.
463s A lot of people were enjoying it.
465s I gained supporters.
466s I felt to myself, "I can really make a living out of this
469s if I spend the hours I need to."
471s Oh, wow!
474s You just break everything.
475s It's my first time in LA and the USA.
478s I really like it. It's a dream for me.

482s the cars, the buildings, everything is cool.
485s The Americans are so cool.
487s I have been so happy to work here.

547s To me, Creative Mode is letting other kids have fun

551s And that means a lot when you think about it.
557s My passion for gaming started really young.
559s In elementary school,
561s I used to come home and play, like, for hours.
563s You know, my mom would always yell at me to get off.
565s When I first heard about Fortnite,
566s I was actually playing basketball outside
568s with my neighbor.
569s So I actually watched him play the game
571s and that made me more pumped.
573s I was, like, downloading it while watching him play.

585s So, what we want to do this morning
587s is actually have each one of you guys run through your maps,

596s The basic map layout is that we have, like, a circle center,
601s which is accessible by four bridges.
604s In the center, we are going to have the two jetpacks,
606s which are key to win.
608s Basically, you collect jetpacks to build your rocket.
611s We have two towers for that.
612s The towers are set up as jet runs.
615s So you get to the jetpacks by doing the jet run.
619s When people play or watch the map,
621s I feel really proud of this because it's a lot of work
624s and sometimes I don't sleep
626s because I want to build and finish the map.
629s So are there any parts of the map that you're concerned about

644s Right now, we have Junkyard Juke.
647s So it's this huge junkyard area.
650s It is also a circle map.
653s There's this big incinerator in the middle,
655s which KK has already set up like a filter system.
659s So the point of the map is you turn into a piece of junk.
662s There's, like, little areas of the junk that you can turn into.
666s The goal is to go into the incinerator
669s without the guards shooting you.

672s the Bolt-Action Sniper or something.
674s I was thinking we do the hand cannon.
676s I feel like the Bolt-Action would be too long.
677s Like, you hear someone shoot
679s and then you know that they're...back
680s so it's like your chance to run.
681s It's a lot different when you're collaborating with others
683s because you have to be a lot more verbal.
685s And it can be a challenge coming from home.
688s You're just used to sitting there and building it.
690s But now you have to really work with everyone else.

695s We're thinking about making,
697s like, a battle royale experience just in Creative.
699s So in this center, we have, like, a stadium --
702s the actual World Cup stadium.
704s This is gonna be one giant storm that's closing in.
707s And we will have teams spawning on flying headphones.
712s We're working on a mechanic such that when your are, like,
715s getting into the stadium,
716s you can't, like, get out again.
717s We've got people from, like, everywhere.
719s Loads of different backgrounds
720s from a bunch of different countries, you know?
722s We all have our own experiences and we can bring something
724s unique and different to the table
726s that you wouldn't get usually within, like,
728s your own isolated world.
730s For the name, we have "Storm the Stadium" or something like...
734s Okay, so the winning condition, just basically --

749s Our idea is to have a scavenger game mode.
752s There will be a circular center.
754s On the four edges of the map,
755s there will be shrines that will have a lama jewel in them.
760s And there will be a different trial to each of these lamas.
766s The win condition is either a time limit --
767s the team that has the most points when the game ends
771s or that reaches the point threshold first.
774s Differently themed. Four different biomes.

780s Pretty much a treasure hunt scavenger game mode.

892s I didn't realize there wasn't a jetpack up there

988s So, we had a great time playtesting Jetpack Capture.
990s So we're gonna start a quick feedback session
992s over what we played.
994s Any feedback you guys have for the Team 1?
996s I think a little bit of ammo granted on respawn
998s would be all right because there were tons of times
1000s where I respawned with no ammo.
1002s When I got one of the jetpacks once,
1003s I don't know if it's just because I don't know the map,
1005s but, like, I didn't know which place I spawned from.
1008s So I kind of forgot where to put it back.
1010s I feel, like, maybe if you have it open up later in the game,
1013s so... three or four minutes in,
1015s another capture point opens up.
1017s If it's got a barrier across the atrium, that's bad.
1019s We can place a big text called "Secret Entrance"
1022s or something like this.
1024s Coming together, everybody from those different countries,
1028s is very interesting.
1029s The first time, it was a little bit hard
1030s because of all the different languages.
1033s Despite it all, you're still able to create things together.
1036s Creative -- it's a universal language.
1039s I feel, like, maybe the capture points for the jetpacks
1041s were a little high.
1043s Maybe two more spots to get the jetpacks at, so...
1046s Because it's a -- The four ways --
1047s Because it's kind of hard to go up the tube.
1049s The camaraderie here is amazing.
1051s Everybody's so nice.
1053s We're all very open to, like,
1054s the development of Fortnite itself.
1056s And I'm really glad to be a part of that.
1061s So, yeah, I think, you know, overall,
1062s excellent, excellent, great start.
1064s But let's get some more feedback

1068s It's too brutal when the shooter can see you.
1072s You have no time to react.
1073s You have to predict.
1075s And it's random. You have no idea.
1077s So maybe it's part of the game. I don't know.
1079s I think there's four different ones
1080s that can be randomly chosen.

1083s You have one second, two seconds, three-and-four seconds.
1085s With everybody here, it's more of a mix
1087s of really good, artistic, and decorative people.
1090s And it's definitely useful to be collaborating with someone
1093s who's more skilled in one aspect than you are.
1095s Some of the taller traps that shoot you really high in the sky
1098s actually give you somewhat of an advantage...

1101s Because you're able to get closer
1102s and you can use that momentum to get closer.
1104s So, maybe reducing the height on those a little bit.

1107s a punishment for hitting the traps.
1108s Because, like, every time I hit one of those,
1110s I was just holding forward and it was, like,
1111s literally getting me closer to, like, the exit.

1137s I think it can be a little bit difficult at times
1139s when you kind of have a different vision.
1141s But at the same time, having a different perspective
1143s on what you're building gives you a new look on it

1152s When I work, I'm very perfectionistic.

1308s Deciding what you're gonna build
1309s and then you build the whole thing
1311s and you follow through with it,
1313s you playtest it and you realize
1314s it's not exactly how you thought it was gonna turn out.
1317s It's a lot of rinse-and-repeat kind of thing
1319s to make it as fun and enjoyable as possible.

1324s So, is there an arrow for each team in each section?

1328s because there are three items they need to collect.

1332s You can only see, like, Team 1 area items.
1334s We're all ambitious mapmakers. We all have different ideas.
1337s And there are definitely times when we sort of collide.
1342s We sort of have to work it out and come to an agreement.
1346s Only one person, maybe, each round, like, got an item.

1351s I mean, it's like you'd almost have to watch a trailer
1353s of how to do the map...
1355s -Yeah. -...before you actually do it.
1356s The biggest lesson I've learned for myself is, like,
1358s learning to be more open to, like, other people's ideas.
1361s I had, like, my skill set coming in and I had to really adapt,
1364s like, what I liked and thought of, like the bigger picture,
1367s which is something that I really want to work on.
1369s And it's like... also really helps me.

1381s Do you guys want to start?
1383s First of all, I want to say great building designs.
1385s They are really inspiring. I think the designs are amazing.
1388s The thing that I noticed is some devices,
1390s like the bounce pads on the walls,
1392s they sometimes feel they have no purpose to be there.
1395s When you use a rift, you can be on the top of the barrier
1399s and you can shoot everyone and no one can shoot you.
1402s Being here has made me a better creator and a better player
1405s just because I've been able to kind of see into the minds
1407s of all the other creators who,
1409s like, have been featured in the game.
1410s And it's just really cool
1411s to be able to, like, work with all of them.
1413s I don't know.
1415s I feel like the point where you respawn and go up at the top,
1418s I feel like it doesn't play well.
1421s Everybody's been great so far, doing their jobs,
1423s what they're supposed to be doing.
1425s Bhushan and Iscariote are really good
1426s at coming up with the mechanics
1428s and me and Shride just working on the buildings.
1429s We're gonna have players
1431s actually spawn in the stadium with no weapons
1433s and then there's gonna be a center point here
1436s where you can get Medkits, Slurps, or Shields.
1439s The first iteration of the map
1440s was definitely not on par with the rest of them,
1443s so I knew we had to make some changes.
1445s I think this one's gonna work even better than the last one.
1448s With all the maps that we're playing,
1450s you guys should expect lots of iterations
1453s to really make the map good.
1455s They're going to be amazing games.
1456s So, do we want to go ahead and start?
1458s Does anybody have some initial feedback?
1460s If you're on a team
1461s that didn't have to collect anything from a desert region,
1464s you, like, instantly have an advantage over the other teams.
1467s Um, maybe also more movement in the forest area.
1471s I really like the center,
1473s how everyone starts and then in, like...
1476s Like the barrier turns off and everyone kind of runs in
1478s and then shoots out of this thing.
1480s My biggest problem was I came out
1482s and I started running from the objectives and somebody who was,
1485s like, two or three seconds slower than me
1487s just shot me in the back.
1488s The designers for Epic are really wonderful
1490s because you can easily share your ideas with them,
1493s they give us some feedback.
1495s It's really perfect to work in those conditions.
1498s Just scrapping the weapons completely
1500s would completely just solve that.
1501s You wouldn't have to worry
1503s about someone shooting you from the back.
1504s But have some way of denying other teams,
1507s maybe Impulse Grenades
1509s or some sort of way to launch them out of the way.
1511s I like that you can set people back
1513s and they might be annoyed to be, like, killed.
1515s So, what about adding Chiller Grenades instead?
1520s It's been really awesome watching your process.
1522s Seeing how fast you guys do stuff is just ridiculous.
1525s It's pretty mind-blowing for us.
1527s When I look back at this experience,
1529s I see, like, a beginning of a new thing.
1531s This will grow into, like, a beautiful thing
1533s that will incorporate players and creators together.
1536s I was really blown away when I first got here
1538s and watched, like, all your guys' talents.
1540s And, like, I'll be watching you guys grow up
1542s and it's gonna be really exciting.
1544s When I look back at this experience,
