Seeing as foxhole has evolved to the point where tank combat does indeed last longer than a few seconds. And how the armor mechanics don't really work that well in the current climate. I am going to provide to you u/markusn82 armor works in another game that I was very active with.
Its a system that makes armor observable and easy to understand. And potentially shake up tank combat to last longer and be more engaging.
Each side of this tank is a number. That number represents how many armored plates that side of the tank has. If you directly hit that side of the tank X amount times. For instance 2 times on its side. You will destroy 2 plates of armor. And on that side you are able to start directly damaging the tanks hp.
What the tank you are shooting has to do is rotate their tank to the side with the most armor or simply rotate to a non exposed side.
Now this is just the basic principle of the mechanic. Below are some examples and a video of how the armor works inside the game.

Now lets add some depth to this.
Armor types
Light armor and heavy armor that you can apply to tanks depending on the type of tank it is.
See where I am going with this right?
Foxhole has different types of tank shells and explosives that excel at doing damage to armor or to buildings. You simply take a shell type and modify how much damage it does to light and heavy armor. And the person who receives the damage has to manage their armor plates and health by rotating and avoiding getting hit on the same plate consistently.
They have to keep rotating the tank and positioning the tank so all their armor plates get damage spread instead of all consistently on the same spot of their tank. Just like in the video I showed you.
If you want your armor plates back. You go to a garage and repair the armor. Existing mechanic.
How do we add the sub system mechanic to this?
When you directly land a hit on a tank with exposed armor on a side. It has a chance to disable a sub system tied to that direction of the damage.
- No frontal armor? Chance to disable turret.
- No side armor? Side to get tracked
- No rear armor? Chance to get a fuel leak
The source of this game mechanic comes from empires.

I played this game from 2011 to 2019. I practically know everything about this game and rip it apart more if you think there are more mechanics we can take inspiration from.
