Just an idea a friend and I had today; create ways of making artificial lighting. It's hard to spot enemies at night, so having flashlights and strong headlights for vehicles might be worthwhile. These would have the effect of making the user more visible, but significantly increasing their visibility within a certain arc. Flashlights could be attached to a rifle, like a bayonet. Headlights and flashlights both should have an on/off switch for when seeing is less important than being seen.

In towns, street lamps and spotlights could be built. Street lamps illuminating a certain radius until the lamp is destroyed, and spotlights would have an AI spotter in them sweeping in a wide arc. If the spotter spots an enemy, the light fixes on them, and nearby AI defenses begin to shoot at them. Observation towers could upgrade to spotlight towers as well. The light itself would be pretty weak defensively, taking only a couple of direct hits to disable.

For more rural areas, and armies on the move, you could have flares. Road flares could temporarily illuminate a certain area when dropped. Pistol flares could be visual signals for other troops or mortar teams to move up or fire on a target. (Having colored smoke flares, or whistle signals for the daytime would also be neat.) Howitzers could also launch illumination shells, large aerial flares which would illuminate a large area, but only for a limited time.

Thoughts?

It's very easy to simply add carryable lights. In the earliest versions of the game, we actually had lanterns you could equip.

However, we wanted to make it so that if we added something like this, it affected your visibility and carved away at the 'fog of war' you experience at night. These two things are what make it not-so-trivial and so therefore not the biggest priority. I suspect you might see this feature one day.
