Hi all,

Today we’re happy to launch the season finale, “One Path Ends”, along with its new open-world zone, the new Fractal “Shattered Observatory”, and two new legendary weapons.

As the season finale, today’s episode is a conclusion and also a lead-in to what comes next. Our goal was to do it in a meaningful way, not with a simple cliffhanger that’d get spoiled as soon as we announced the next expansion. I can’t say more without revealing too much, but I love it that we get to make episodes like this and tell stories like this. I want to congratulate the episode six team for the care and crafting that went into getting it just right, especially in getting the moments just right.

Here’s who’s with us today.

From the Living World team – Andy McLeod, Alina Chadwick, Angel McCoy, Joe Kimmes, Kevin Millard, Linsey Murdock, Robert Land, Taylor Southerland

From the Fractals team – Cameron Rich

From the engine team – Ester Sauter, Jon Olson

From the comms team – Gaile Gray, Lis Cardy

This’ll be a bit of an unusual AMA, since it’s hard to talk about today’s episode without spoiling it, and we have an announcement coming soon that will answer most of your other questions. Even if we can’t say much, this is release day, and it’s our tradition to hang out together on release days, so let’s hang out.

Mo

Edit: We have a few devs still answering but let's officially wrap up here. Thank you all for joining us today, and we'll see you again soon!

Can you share/hint something about the legendary accessory, please? As in will it have any effect in game, what is it and so on.

Thank you in advance.

It gives your character a persistent effect that we've tried to make distinct from other legendaries (or infusions, shoulders, etc.)

Any plans to do a core trait/skill update again any time soon ?

The last few were nice but there is still tons of repetitive, mechanically disappointing or just plain sub par stuff in game (Looks at spirit weapons & hollowed ground)

The skills and balance team is pleased to say that you'll be seeing a balance pass in the next release. We're looking forward to it! -Karl

Can we expect Legendary Trinkets as possible rewards for other parts of the game such as fractals, WvW, SPvP, and raids? Or will they be tied specifically to future Living Story Seasons?

We have an entire set of trinkets planned out, and they won't all be tied to Living Story.

To anyone who's in charge of the story. I really got to ask about Rytlock and his story development and of course issues with the revenant I have from an RP and lore perspective.

  1. When someone says "Rytlock is the first Revenant," does that mean he is the originator/creator of the profession, or is it that he's the first "known Revenant" or the one that made the Revenant popular within Tyrian Society? Now depending on the answers, leads to an inconsistency which needs to be addressed.

  2. With Rytlock keeping his mouth shut through this season about how he obtained his powers (even getting arrested for keeping secrets) how does the Tyrian population come across such knowledge if he's being silent? Wouldn't that mean from a lore standpoint any other Revenant that exists technically shouldn't exist?

This is coming from a fan who loves RP and lore, and I want to respect your narrative as much as possible to further create my own stories around what happens without breaking anything. I hope you can answer some of these concerns of mine.

Extra question: Will he be a prominent character for the next expansion seeing that we didn't get to see him in the last episode?

No one really knows what happened to Rytlock while he was in the Mists, but he was the first known Revenant. He emerged from the Mists with these new powers, and word of the profession spread quickly throughout Tyria. [[Note: You'll have to overlook a little disconnect because we introduced a new profession and it may not make good lore sense that suddenly there are all these players who are Revenants. This is one of those things where a gameplay element was introduced that doesn't have a solid lore background. That's just the reality of game design sometimes. I hope you love playing a Revenants! Feel free to make up your own roleplaying background for how your character learned the skills. :) ]]

Hi ANet folks, I returned to GW2 about 2 months ago after being away for a few years. I really like the Living World content and have played through season 2, HOT and season 3 since returning. From perusing the internet it looks like season 1 was quite epic and I'm disappointed it's not playable now.

All living world content since season 1 can be purchased and played. Will season 1 ever be playable? There are players like me who would love to play it and even pay for it.

Thanks.

It's a question that comes up a lot. I have favorite moments I'd love to play again too. But we researched it a while back and realized that restoring and updating Season 1 content, and putting it into episode format, isn't particularly easier than making new episodes. And we think the community is better served with new episodes.

After finishing the living season 3 and wrapping up Heart of Thornes, what would be the most insightful things you guys have learned during all those months compared to developing the Core game (for those who have been around for so long)?

Building the original game was like building a house, where we laid the foundation for all future content. Building LW episodes is more like decorating the house! Hard work, lots of creativity, teamwork, and a big sense of accomplishment.

Hi Arenanet! You guys have mentioned before that you split the Living World team into three groups, and each got their own bit of the story to produce. My question is: how was the cooperation between teams? Was there a lot of communication between each team, or did they mostly keep to themselves when working on their parts of the story?

Communication is hugely important here. We're constantly talking, sharing what we're working on, and collaborating to solve challenges and ensure continuity.

Hello! Wonderful work this season! I was curious if you guys will have a presences at PAX West {Prime, whatever you crazy kids want to call it} this year? Or if it would be just the community party? I know people want to purchase tickets but are waiting to hear from you guys. And if you cannot answer it outright you can just tell if it would be in our best interest to plan our time wisely at PAX

We're going to have details about PAX-related activities next week.

Hey Mo, thanks for the nice patch (to all of you). Please hand out special thanks to whoever is responsible for the sounds in the final instance. Those attacks' sound design was on spot and felt very impactful and high in quality.

Thank you! I too am a fan of the audio in that scene. And honestly I'm a fan of the whole scene. There are a lot of little things that come together to make it more than the sum of its parts.

I'll convey your compliment to Drew and the audio team, and to Taylor who owned the instance.

I do like the "maps frozen in time" concept, but I'm sure it can be confusing to players outside online communities (:

So, have you considered putting timestamps along with fun lore onto map loading screens, like "Lake Doric, 1234 A.E. - The human capital city gets attacked by the White Mantle, an organization which..."?

It's a suggestion that comes up, but so far we're staying away from putting reading material on the loading screens, because players aren't in control of how long those screens stay up, and the time varies a lot from system to system.

Lore question. A book in the Shining Blade HQ says that Livia retired from her Master Exemplar role, then spent the rest of her life in said HQ before dieing in 1157. The same book lists a few Masters Exemplar, starting with Laurelai in ... 1157.

Question : how much time passed between Livia's retirement and her supposed death ? Several years (in this case there must be another Master Exemplar between her and Laurelai) ? A few weeks/months (in this case there is no other Master Exemplar) ?

Also, Bartholos' book says it was written in 1089AE, but it also says he gave it to the Shining Blade in 1088AE. Which year is correct ?

I need to know so I make sure I didn't write wrong stuff on the wiki page

History, as you know, is not always recorded with exacting precision, especially dates. Thanks for working on the wiki!!

I loved the story in One Path Ends, and I also liked the variety in rewards, both short term and long term. Big success! I look forward to exploring the new map further! (And beyond!)

Q: With the increased attention that has been given to rewards, particularly since late Season 2, why are achievement points distributed so sparingly now? For example, story steps in Seasons 2 & 3 have granted zero achievement points, and many other difficult achievements in Season 3 have granted fewer than 5 each. The point values have been so low in some categories that they almost feel like placeholders, waiting for the real values to be assigned. (A more recent of healthier point values can be found with the Shatterer achievements.)

Some examples:

  • Gold in Adventures — 1 AP each
  • I'm Rubber; You're Destroyer (Kill forty Destroyers with their own pustule bombs in the Dragon Vigil Story instance) — 1 AP
  • Most Season 3 Mastery Points — 1 AP each
  • Honorary Crew Member (difficult Lake Doric ship defense event) — 1 AP
  • Where Exalted Dare (Auric Basic Herta) — 1 AP
  • The Spirit Vale achievements — almost all under 5 AP

I'm so happy you enjoyed it! Thank you for saying so. :)

To the Living World Team: With regards to the new maps that have been introduced with Season 3, what were some of the mechanics introduced, or reintroduced, to open world content that you saw was the most well received?

To Everyone: If you could watch a movie with any of the recurring characters in the story; who would it be, and what movie would you watch?

Anise would make a great James Bond reboot.

One feature I remember asking for long ago were Lore Books, which we now have and I personally love. I also remember one of the writers saying a long time ago that they have the tech for them themselves to do that kind of stuff, so I would like to thank you guys for that feature, for pouring more of the incredible lore of this for us to read and at the same time encourage you to create many more book/dairies/recording collections cause the players that asked for it are really happy, definitely reading and collecting them!

Woo! You made my day. :)

I noticed that you've done some 'testing' with new engine features, most noticeably the Blessing of Dwayna(I think it was) that is present on the gliding section of the story with toxic clouds, and of course the Ley-Line creature skills. Those felt like little experiments with new features, is it safe to assume that these are little tests for what's to come in the expansion and how we, the playerbase, would react to these new mechanics?

Our team programmer is making new tech for us all the time. (Thanks Alina).

Can I just say thank you for this wonderful game. I know this isn't EP6 related, but I've not been able to play GW2 until the last few months and now that I have it has blown me away. It really is one of the best games I've played, and I've been playing games since 3D Monster Maze on the Spectrum.

I'm still catching up with everything - HoT, LW, etc - but I'm so chuffed to be playing at this exciting time and cannot wait to see how things develop during the next expansion.

Cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to let us know! Makes me so happy!

I guess I wish I had a really good question for you guys but I don't. I just wanna say I really feel like you guys hit it out of the park with this release. New fractal with a challenge mode, new (cool!) story episode and a pretty sweet zone (love the Dwayna reliquary). Two legendary weapons instead of one, I honestly haven't even looked at the hammer properly but I'm head over heels for the sword. A surprise legendary* trinket too! The materials storage changes, the book of teleport scrolls, the updates to the old legendaries. Absolutely awesome.

<3 for you.

And a bit of a slap that person didn't trust us, considering her last interaction with us was telling the PC how their parents would be proud of them. Is there just not enough time to tie in things from the personal story when writing Living World episodes? Also you'd think spoiler I'm just curious as to why these weren't included.

EDIT: I really enjoyed the episode btw! This is a writing/prioritisation question, not a complaint!

It wasn't so much that person didn't trust you, per se -- it was that there was this automatic assumption of everyone agreeing to just do the thing Their objection had more to do with the apparent breach of organizational policy than anything specifically personal against the commander.

/u/Mike-OBrien-ArenaNet or /u/Anet_AndrewM maybe you can help answer this. When legendary armor was released, there was talk about legendary weapons allowing players to swap sigils like legendary armor. This would be one of the most enormously important QOL updates for these weapons since we currently can't recover sigils from our legendaries. Is there any movement being made in bringing this functionality over to weapons? Thank you in advance.

We have some things we're working on in regards to this, but it's not far enough along to discuss specifics.

Correct. We do not have a booth.

We do have a panel about sound design on Friday, September 1, at 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time (UTC-7) at the Hydra theatre. You do need a PAX badge to attend. Having said that, PAX is set up to livestream presentations in that room, so we're planning on hosting the livestream on the Guild Wars 2 Twitch channel (assuming nothing changes in terms of PAX's technical setup).

These two events are the "official" ArenaNet events at PAX. Individual staff members may be on panels, but those were organized by staff members separately from marketing events and aren't specifically topical to Guild Wars 2.
