[2021] How does the time based missions work for solo?

You can choose to either drop down to a permanent Outpost (with no time limit) or a timed Prospect mission.

Yes that's on purpose. Players requested Outposts be safe without dangerous weather and creatures.

Also - there will also be timed Prospects that last a LONG time. You'll have ample time to build, explore, relax, prepare and then complete the mission objectives. The time limit doesn't mean you have to speed run.
