Can someone explain what happens if I start playing now, vs waiting until the patch?

I heard it was just endgame changes and a new class spec, are there other significant changes to leveling or loot that will be coming with the update? There’s no “season specific league” for characters either right? Everything is in the same one whether I start today or in a week?
