Hi there!

Today a member of the community posted here on r/LastEpoch to share their concerns regarding in-game moderation - which is, of course, fine. Regretfully, the post also included screenshots of in-game chat to 'name and shame' individual people - which is not.

As we had to action the thread for a rules violation, I am creating this thread so that the community has a place to openly discuss our policies, the moderation of our in-game chat, and the current process of how people bring inappropriate behaviour to our attention.

Last Epoch's CCU has recently been growing exposively, and one area in which we need to improve is creating better ways for people to report inappropriate comments, names, and other issues to us. Currently this has to be done out of game, through our support site, which is not a great experience & definitely stifles the number of reports we receive.

We're actively working on implementing support for reporting people in-game, so that you can right-click on a user's message in chat and choose from the options Harassment, Inappropriate Name, Offensive Language, or Spam. This will send a report to us without you needing to leave the game client, and will result in a much greater proportion of objectionable behaviour coming to our attention and being handled appropriately. We hope to make this available in our next content patch, or perhaps even earlier.

When this functionality has been implemented, it will remain possible to report the conduct of fellow community members through our support site, should you wish to, for any reason. Please understand that we will not be able to inform of you what precise action has been taken, but we will be able to acknowledge your report and confirm either that it has been investigated or that we have escalated it to another member of our team. While I'm speaking of our support site, we also aim to replace it entirely within the next two months: new features will include being able to log in & view both current and old support tickets, dynamic contact forms which make clear which information we need in a variety of cases, and the ability to submit multiple files at once without zipping them.

We welcome all honest feedback - be it the most complimentary of praise, the most scathing of criticism, or somewhere between the two extremes. We do ask, however, that you avoid naming specific individual community members when discussing moderation.

Thank you for your passion, as always!

Maybe sticky this post?

Not ruling it out, but trying to see whether this is a short-term focus or more of a long-term discussion (at least until we ship better tools).

You know you're hitting the big time when you have to spend more and more time devoted to smoothing people's social behaviors.

John, thanks for taking this on, if you all handle this subject they way you've handled everything else with Last Epoch it'll be straight up Grade A.

And seconded on the 'sticky post.'

this morning there were people openly abusing the lack of chat moderation by posting extremely racist comments that seemed to be one-uping each other to see how far they could go before they got banned.

The in game reports needs to happen soon! Thanks!

I'm very sorry to hear that. I can't honestly claim to have personally seen it.

We do action reports we receive as appropriate, as well as sometimes having staff quietly monitoring chat. We do care about doing better here.

Great to know this is coming down the pipeline. I figured I'd have to turn global chat off as the game got busier, but maybe not.

I can't promise there'll never be any objectionable language or behaviour in chat, but we'll definitely be making improvements.

It's so strange to me that people feel the need to be jerks in public chat channels. Especially people who seem to spend hours at a time just posting trolling posts like "PoE is better." over and over again. But I guess revilement is a form of connection and empowerment for some sad folks out there.

So great to hear there are tools coming to make reporting faster and easier.

Yeah, I feel sorry for folks who look forward to the weekend to do... that.

I don’t understand the necessity of censoring names, someone feel free to explain to me their point of view.

To me, you’ve said those things on a public platform, a platform you know is being recorded. Why shouldn’t this person be held accountable for his words?

So much hate is given under the shield of anonymity.

Edit: I misinterpreted the first paragraph. Yes, it makes sense to mitigate shaming of people just trying to do their jobs.

So, there's a few reasons.

Please understand that it's the weekend - and 11:30 at night where I live - but to list off a few at the top of my head;

  • All moderation action is performed after reviewing chat logs. Due to Photoshop et al, screenshots are not considered proof.
  • While some behaviour is deplorable, publicly holding people to account can result in witch hunts, which are not helpful.
  • If someone is not issued a permanent ban, we have some hope of them turning things around and becoming friendly and valued members of the community. Having a bad day and losing the rag one time shouldn't be held over your head forever.

Yes, you make some great points.

Its irksome all the racism, sexism, homophobia etc we have to deal with online. the repercussions are often very limited punishments that, for the most part, are just minor inconvenience to the offender.

You’re right though, the permanency of it. Especially when we account for minors.

This is definitely a fair criticism initially - however if you keep breaking the same rule, you work your way up the ‘penalty volcano’.

We try to have a light hand at first, but we expect people to learn from initial moderation. Continually breaking the same rule will see progressively harsher responses administered.

When we catch people doing things that are blatantly trying to harm the game experience for others at this magnitude they are being game banned. Fortunately, the vast majority of players have been fostering good community discussion. Those outliers are putting a major fire under us to ensure this is shored up as quickly as possible and until then we're rotating the dev team to monitor chat. Thanks for bearing with us

That's a damn shame.

Kind of on the topic of social stuff though, do you guys have any concrete plans on guilds and guild functionality? I mean, just a guild chat would be amazing (and might alleviate the problems in global chats somewhat).

Concrete plans for them, not at the moment. If it’s a common request after multiplayer is launched or we come up with a cool guild system idea I wouldn’t rule it out though
