Scenario: Player gets annoyed. Player says bad word, that happens to be on The List. Player gets chat blocked for the rest of the game so he cannot contaminate our family friendly atmosphere with his heinous evil.

Fair enough. I'm not gonna get into the argument of whether this should exist, or whether it's too harsh, or whatever. That's all been done. So for the sake of this argument, that's all fine. But why the f*ck are they also blocked from reading chat? That just prevents me from communicating with him. Why the f*ck are the other 4 players being forced to play at a disadvantage because BadPlayer did something naughty? If someone says "push out top and mid then let's Baron", BadPlayer isn't going to know the gameplan. "Just communicate with pings bro". Why the f*ck should I have to? I did nothing wrong, and some things simply can't be communicated with pings, especially now that Riot keeps restricting what we can do with them.

We found that after a player gets muted the other players in game tend to talk about it. Often, the things they have to say about the person who got muted aren't very fun to read, and it sucks having to read that without being able to defend yourself. So we made the decision to just mute the player too.

Since the system that drives this is a lot simpler than our after game chat stuff, it catches a lot more false positives. That sucks, but we think it's worth it to get certain words out of the game (although we can always improve).

But because of that we don't do any extra punishing for the chat messages we mute.
