In traditional sports most teams are representing a state or city or school.

I grew up in Michigan in the US. Detroit teams have always been who we cheer for. It doesent matter how bad our teams do, that’s our home team and we’re loyal. If I move Detroit will always be my number - team.

Even if the players themselves aren’t from Detroit, they represent for us.

Esports teams typically don’t have that same “home town” origin to it. Who does TSM represent? They represent TSM. Who does Cloud 9 represent? Cloud 9. Esports teams only ever represent the brand that hired them, not the city that that brand hails from.

So when you have an entire franchise of esports teams how do you decide who you root for?

Some of the team associations/owners are interesting. For instance, Flyquest is owned by one of the owners of the Milwaukee Bucks. GG is associated with with the Golden State Warriors. Bjergesen owns part of TSM, and Faker owns part of SKT.T1, Nadeshot and 100t, etc. It's definitely worth looking into the history of some of these orgs.

Go Red Wings by the way :)
