TL;DR: During the production of Arcane in 2017, Riot was not happy with the script and had to put a hold on Arcane. Since they had just hired a massive amount of top talented French animators, they needed something for Fortiche to work on and that's when Rise and K/DA Pops/Star were born.

First of all, if you haven't seen the short series "Arcane: Bridging the Rift", please go watch it. It's a series about the production and behind-the-scenes of Arcane. Extremely high-production and well-edited (seriously, they went so hard on this wtf).

In 2017, they had already wrapped up the production of episode 1 for Arcane. Christian, the producer and writer of Arcane, along with Riot built Fortiche up from a team of 5 people to a studio of 100 (now 300+) of top French animators to work on Arcane. However, Riot was not happy with the script for episodes 2 and 3 and decided to halt the entire production of Arcane for the follow-up episodes. If this went on, the massive team of animators they hired would not have work to do for months and would have to be let go. Christian felt the responsibility to keep the lights on at Fortiche, so he reached out to different teams at Riot to ask if they could have anything for Fortiche to work on. The outcome is 2 of the most watched music videos on the League of Legends YouTube channel, with Pop/Stars being #1 and Rise #3 (Warriors being #2, also animated by Fortiche).

Similarily, Arcane wouldn't've even happened without the success of Rise and K/DA. The first draft was a complete and utter failure, and without the studio and Riot scaling back to do some small projects to boost confidence before diving back into Arcane, the funding for Arcane never would be supported or approved.

And of course, Get Jinxed! was the original starting point which got the project director in on this idea to collaborate with Fortiche on a laaarge project in the first place

Edit: I was very mistaken and the first draft wasn't nearly as disastrous as I had thought. Sorry for the misinformation and thanks Christian for all the work and effort!

"complete an utter failure"

wat.

the funding of arcane also had absolutely nothing to do with rise or the kda video.

neither did anyone need a confidence boost.

The first few episodes' scripts that were done directly caused Fortiche to almost shut down because of how bad it was. All production was stopped until they found an actual showrunner. In the meantime, Rise and K/DA were literally projects Christian pulled out of his ass to keep 'the lights on at Fortiche'.

So, without Rise or K/DA, many of the animators would literally have been laid off and it was a high probability that without those two projects, the animators that Fortiche hired to do Arcane would've gone and found other projects to commit to.

Believe me, ooor just... watch the literal first few minutes of https://youtu.be/xpPyPguzafU?si=_UXmV_WRYmLDk78r this episode.

Edit: sorry, I was very mistaken! I must've taken the documentary too seriously and I apologise. I really do appreciate all the effort and time went into the show and didn't mean to undermine any of that!

I guess what do I know

Ah shoot, sorry. I really didn't know too much and I suppose I based way too much on what I watched through the documentary. Really sorry once again for saying things that weren't truthful!

No problem my friend. :) I can see how our quippy comments can get misinterpreted.

We had to take another crack at the season arc for sure. A lot of it was streamlining and filling gaps (like letting characters clearly own episodes. Nearly every episode begins with a flashback of the respective character that really runs the episode). Though a good amount of the story stayed the same.

I attribute the harsher criticism to the fact that people had a lot of doubts. We had never done this before. Script reading is subjective. It’s much easier not to believe.
