Hello!

Starting in patch 10.23, Metal will be available for beta testing for Macs on PBE. Players can switch to Metal by doing the following:

  1. Right click the PBE application icon and select "Show Package Contents"
  2. Navigate to "LoL/Config/game.cfg" and open the file with a text editor
  3. Add "MetalBetaTest=true" to the list of configs under [General]
  4. Save

If your hardware is compatible, the following line will be found in your game logs, otherwise it will fall back to OpenGL automatically on game client launch.

Using X3D Platform: Metal

We hope to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone so if you find any graphical or performance issues exclusive to Metal, please report them in this thread along with your game logs and any relevant media.

Happy Testing! 😊

Hmm, I'm not quite sure I follow, would you mind elaborating? You should still have "League of Legends (PBE)" under Applications regardless of using Riot Client to log in to PBE/Live.

Its Graphics engine (API) for iOS (can be compared to DirectX on Win).

This is the simplest answer, think of the transition to Metal on Mac similar to what we did for DX11 on Windows :) Apple has more information here if you'd like to learn more!

I have been testing with this change, it has been fine so far but just after the patch this afternoon to restore preseason to the PBE I noticed that chat was not working (not able to type, no pings, no history, it was as if chat did not exist). As well, kills/aces/shutdowns etc. do not have the normal border and champion icons, only the text. I removed the "MetalBetaTest=true" from the config and they are working again. As well, the PBE crashed ~5 times in 1 match, but that may just be due to client instability rather than Metal.

Thanks for reporting these! They should all be fixed in today's PBE build :)

The main client auto switches to PBE when I sign in with my pbe account. I do have the pbe client from before the client was updated but that version hasn’t been updated since September so I assumed that my main client was only being used for both.

What you use to log in with is the Riot Client and not what you're trying to modify. Under Finder > Applications, you should still see two separate applications - "League of Legends" and "League of Legends (PBE)". These get installed after logging in with the account associated with each for the first time. The same occurs on Windows in C:/RiotGames/ - you should see "League of Legends" and "League of Legends (PBE)".

Oh! You can upload them to dropbox or google drive and share them via a link :)

Thank you for the logs! And that's awesome to hear about the performance, reports like yours are super helpful so that we can continue to improve the experience for Mac players.

Would you be able to verify if you're still encountering this issue on PBE? We've made a fix that I think will solve the issues you're seeing.

Framerate Drops during certain Actions: When entering or exiting the Ult from Jhin or Xerath the framerate drops from constant VSynced 60fps to about 30. The same happens when you show the scoreboard using Tab while spectating or replaying a game (especially if you spam it). Without the „MetalBetaTest= true“ these animations were running smoothly. I am using an i7 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM from early 2020. Here are my Logs and Settings https://gofile.io/d/YRxqgi - hope this helps edit: fixed :)

Will look into this, thank you!

Thanks for your help! We're updating our API to be able to make improvements to performance and rendering :)

Hello! Thanks for reaching out! This doesn't seem to be a Metal specific issue and looks like there is already a fix for it on the way. To disable Metal, you'll need to go into your LCU settings and under the Game tab, you'll see a checkbox for falling back to OpenGL legacy mode. Hope that helps! :)
