League has been designed for potatoes for a very long time, would love if a rioter could say exactly how high the specs are going to be now.

Is it going to be barely noticeable or allow Riot to do more things like skins matching elementalist lux

This change is about phasing out support for older operating systems, not about hardware. Won't mean more memory available for development, will mean things like a somewhat easier development process, slightly streamlined QA, better security etc though instead.

/u/RiotMeddler thanks for a year of dev updates, I was wondering, with Riot branching out into more games and IP expressions. Could you share if visual designs from other games will be the designs of the champs going forward since some champs are starting fork like Janna having separate visuals in WR and LoR or Vlad and Syndra getting updated designs in WR

We want to make sure the core essence of a champion's maintained throughout the different places they appear. We also want to support different art styles and tones though, so some degree of variance is deliberate. Going to be case by case. A lot of the time though is one product demonstrates a strong upgrade to an existing character we'll want to adopt that elsewhere too whenever we next work on them (e.g. LoR Nid's a great take on the character I'd love to see elsewhere, Arcane's take on Caitlyn was something we wanted to adopt everywhere once we saw it etc)

Are there any plans to improve minimum memory? The Hwei dev blogs suggested it was a serious limitation on what they could do with him

We'll keep looking at min spec, memory included, each year or so. While we'd love to open up some options for the dev team we also don't want to exclude a significant number of players to do so, so it's an ongoing balancing act

Unrelated to the statement but shoutsout to Brightmoon. Seems like a really nice guy, the guy who becomes EP for League's got some shoes to fill.

Agreed, we'll very much miss him on the League team once he moves on to do other stuff at Riot (though you'll still see him for a couple more months or so!)

Also, shameless plug to people possibly reading - if you love League and have experience leading a large dev team (ideally live service) we'd love to hear from you! We'll be posting the job opening on our website sometime really soon

Yes, it's just so weird that people get upset that they release an expensive, totally optional vanity chroma. If it helps keeps the game free I have zero issue.

I think there's a really understandable concern in there that cosmetics in general might shift towards all being really expensive. One of the things we wanted to highlight here is that high priced content for those who want something exclusive due to its price is an addition, not a replacement, to the stuff we're already doing

That's kind of you to say - I love this game and this community and will still be around and cheering you all on. I look forward to introducing you all to the next EP soon!

Windows 7, windows 8 and 8.1 are being discontinued btw. Probably less than 1% of player base.

Yep. For decisions like this we look at a mixture of current % of player base, decline in usage of said operating systems each month and where the larger gaming market is going in general (other games deprecating accelerates players moving off them even more etc etc)

hey Meddler, could you answer something about these skins? I and many others asked support and they couldn't say.

We know DCE Jhin will be rollable in loot in 2024. The same was never confirmed for True Damage Ekko. Could you clarify if this will be true for all of these skins?

Exactly how Mythic Variants will interact with the loot system is something we haven't determined ourselves quite yet, which is assumedly why Player Support had to tell you they couldn't say. First couple were a trial to see what interest was like, so we hadn't sorted out all the longer term details. Apologies for the lack of answer beyond that, we'll definitely get it clarified soonish, didn't want to just leave the question unanswered at all though either

Kinda weird that they did a dev update video as it feels there wasn't much to talk about since Phreak had the rundown of all the preseason changes but still nice to hear from them. Sad to see Brightmoon go the guy is just so pleasant in all of these videos and on social media.

Yeah, this one did feel lighter, especially the lack of core gameplay stuff. We'd originally pencilled in some time to talk about 'preseason' changes, particularly what needed clarification, what was controversial etc. Didn't end up with much to say there though since things have been generally going pretty smoothly. We concluded we should still do a video, stay in the habit of talking regularly even if there's sometimes a bit less to say. You'll also get a much longer, chunkier set of topics early January with season start of course too!

However, I feel I would make a great candidate for this role because my Dr. Mundo adc is already making shockwaves in Bronze 3 - 48 LP elos. I expect to be picked up by either G2, T1, or TSM-China soon so please make an offer soon.

Hmm, to the best of my knowledge Jeremy/Brightmoon has never played Mundo ADC. Sorry, I think you must be overqualified as a result, we'll have to pass.

Will League of Legends ever be put on steam? The riot forge games are on there.

No current plans to. Forge games are a pretty different offering since they're single player, completable, aimed at being accessible to an audience that hasn't necessarily played League before etc. We took a different distribution approach as a result

Unreleased games are tackled by a different part of the company. If there's news to share that'll come from those folks in different formats rather than as part of the existing live games messaging

Related to cosmetics but not pricing, it was mentioned in the last dev vlog that mystery icons and wards would be returning in the next Blue Essence Emporium, but the FAQ does not currently have those items listed (despite being updated last Thursday).

Did that plan change, or is the FAQ just not fully updated?

Mystery icons and wards should be in, FAQ needs to be updated again.

Only exception to that is gifting said icons and wards, that hit some last minute serious bugs and won’t be in this run unfortunately

Can you share a little bit about what the live team does and what kind of technical background is needed? I've always wanted to throw my hat in the riot games ring but never feel like my qualifications match up with what is open.

Live service here is just a short hand for the sort of game League is - online game with very regular updates over multiple years etc (versus a finished, released and done single player game or a new unreleased game still being developed but not yet publicly playable etc)

u/RiotMeddler,

Hi Meddler,

Are we going to hear more about reworks/VGU's this upcoming season start in January?

I know that plans were being explored from what i've understood, maybe u/neolexical can expand on this? There's bunch of folks out there (myself included) craving to hear more on this topic!

I do think this is an important topic not only for the current game state but also for it's future longevity, pretty sure a large part of the community would love to see these older champions get updated to today's modern standard rather than new champions. I understand news champions might be something still important regarding to your plans and roadmap, but i think the main focus should be on these different type of reworks, many champions are still missing their full identity on the game when we look at newer champions coming out, lot of new skins for these champions are also being held back by either the current model and/or their animations.

Also i'm not sure it was mentioned but since quite a few patches, there's an increase with the riot API's in latency within the client... (skip stats for this match is longer than usual since few patches) is this something you guys are aware?

Oh and lastly... please Shyvana VGU!

We will have an update on VGUs in the next update in the new year!
In terms of VGUs, lot of times when a player like a champion, they actually do not want any changes to the champion. We did a deeper dive into this through thousands of surveys. Most of the time, players want a champion that they "potentially" want to play changed more towards their taste.
Thus, with every rework, we do end up losing some of the mains of that champion which, in some cases like Skarner, we will it is okay to do so for the bigger potential.
Some of the oldest and crustiest champions are also some of the toughest to find a way to fit into modern roster in a way that has considerations for who they were (sometimes good and sometimes really big baggage). We do need to adhere to some basic rules (we cannot change Skarner to a humanoid). The skins count for update is also a considerable amount of work for Champion's team. We are a team that is traditionally very very good at creating new things and not necessarily working at scale/making multiple skins at a time. We are getting better at it and are also trying to figure out better way to scale and making visual updates faster.
The other thing to consider is core engagement. New champion has the draw of bringing something completely new to the rift. This changes the experience for the 10 players involved in the game. Where we actually do not see re-engagement/ more peaked interest to the same degree from players when it comes to updates.
Thus, the basic equation is we are spending upwards of 3 times as much compared to making a new champion to updating a champion that will not have the equivalent return of engagement hours.
However, you are right we need to continue to maintain the general state of the game and make sure the game overall feel modernized! This is the reason we continue to put reworks on the roadmap.

HOW are they shocked that VGUs bring less engagement than new champions if they've been exclusively updating champions like Skarner, Udyr, Mundo for the last 3+ years???

Incorporating more popular champs means we have more players to lose and upset when we change the champion they love the most.

Yeah I think a lot of the players asking for VGUs would much rather have an ASU and maybe a midscope for their champ. Seems like we're running out of kits that need full VGU imo

I agree! There are still a couple VGUs that probably needs to get done. But they are also ones that aren't THAT much upsides (ex Corki).
There are some VUs/VgUs that we SHOULD invest into that do also require time as we get deeper understanding/world building to figure out what things mean in Runeterra (ex Shaco and what are demons).
For some, its just not the right time yet. For others, its more that there are some quick wins that need the folks!
The more skins a champion has, the more work we need to put in...so it's always a trade off. But in any case, more info in the new year :D
