For the record, I am far from an anti-vaxxer, nor anti-mask, nor anti-restrictions when necessary. But it feels like Australia has taken it to an even greater level than the data on the pandemic backs up. I really don't think Australia can outrun Omicron forever.

Kinda sick of not being able to visit my own country I was born in for 2+ years now. What is happening over in Western Australia? Omicron is the least pathogenic variant of the virus we've had thus far. Surely it needs to open up eventually.

I am fully vaccinated, wear masks in public wherever I can, have stayed inside my apartment for most of the pandemic. Despite all of that, with omicron, Sweden seems to be doing more than fine. Australia is just like "we're never gonna let anyone in ever"

@BriteBytes It certainly has a very low death rate, but I do wonder at what cost - both economically and emotionally for families that have been separated for years now.

Maybe I'm just pissed and not thinking rationally about this. Yet everything I've read about omicron and the data behind it, it really feels like we have ample opportunity to let this virus run its course and displace dangerous variants like delta. Of course, with vaccines

@joshhunt Not in Western Australia. Only now on the 5th of Feb can I come back, but have to do 14 days quarantine + 4 separate PCR tests spread throughout, and be triple vaccinated. It's beyond unnecessary in my eyes.

@oPryzeLP Technically I've been able to visit Australia, just not go to the state I live in

@joshhunt Yeah looks like other states have been pretty good. When I say Australia, I'm mostly talking about WA. But even the rest of the states took their sweet time to open up.

@autismfather You'd hope our hospital infrastructure would have been improved over the past 2 years to prepare for reopening. But I guess not.

@aeonlamb Ah my bad, I misused the word pathogenic. I meant to mean causing death/harsh symptoms. Thanks for letting me know.

As someone kindly mentioned lower down, I am misusing the word "pathogenic". I mean to say that it is the least deadly/capable of causing harsh symptoms. Thanks to @aeonlamb for correcting me.

@vivideerie Yes you're right, it's the most contagious but the least deadly. I corrected that below as I was using the wrong terms for pathogenic.

@JoshJ_27 @aeonlamb Yes, but that is actually a good thing because it is displacing more severe variants like delta which is causing much worse hospitalization rates.

@tuberbob @autismfather Certainly am aware of that, I just don't think that overall it is a good thing for a country to stay closed internationally for years. The Australian government has had ample opportunity to vaccinate people and prepare for covid. I just want to be able to visit my family.

@JoshJ_27 @aeonlamb Sure, but that's the case with the flu as well. I don't think the strategy has ever been to get to 0 deaths, the strategy is to make it maintainable so our hospitals aren't overwhelmed. From what I'm seeing, death rate is really quite low versus cases - closer to the flu.

@JoshJ_27 @aeonlamb And again, to clarify, the death rate is low with omicron. Other variants are still a problem - but it really is looking like omicron is displacing those variants. Which is definitely a good thing.

@JoshJ_27 @aeonlamb I'm sorry to hear that. But are you aware of what variant it is? There is quite good data on omicron causing less severe symptoms. Anacdotelly, my dad got really bad flu 2 years ago and had to go to the hospital. Almost died from complications, but pulled through. It can happen.

@JoshJ_27 @aeonlamb With the R value that this new variant has, I'm not sure it's even possible to eradicate. It's simply too contagious and vaccines will only help prevent it from giving bad symptoms. Personally I'm not sure I'm too excited at the prospect of more lockdowns with minimal return.
