I have to be honest, I was EXTREMELY nervous to announce that we were delaying the Deep Dark and Warden. We wanted to make it bigger but I wasn't sure if the community would accept it. Time and time again we're shown that the community has our back, and I can't be more grateful.

For me also, I wanted to make sure that the Warden got a lot of time and polish to make it truly frightening in both its behavior and presence throughout the biome. That takes time, and it has to be done with the community - as you can see we haven't been able to snapshot it yet.

There are a couple aspects to the delay. We have been wrapping up C&C Part 2 and with how ambitious the Deep Dark got, it would make no sense to risk the C&C Part 2 release and also risk shipping a very poor quality Deep Dark. We also REALLY wanted unique loot in the cities.

So without snapshots and being so close to the C&C Part 2 release, we figured it's better to wait. Let's do this right. Let's make this really immersive and nail-biting for The Wild Update. Thank you everyone for the amazing support, as always.

@RTurniansky That was part of it. I saw people wanted a really good Deep Dark biome so I switched focus to making the cities. This is why communication is important with the community

@PotholedSea40 The loot in the Live video is completely temporary, although I plan to have something like snowballs so players can get inspired to use them for distractions

I want to talk about the heartbeat in the Warden videos: when developing the Warden for the first time, sound design was super important to me and the mob was designed with that in mind. Part of me wanted to hear the player's "heartbeat" as the Warden got closer, for anticipation

Currently the Warden's heartbeat gets faster the more angry or "close" it is to finding its prey. In real time, this has really felt like it mimics the panic level of the player itself - the closer the Warden is to finding you, the more anxious you're probably going to be.

That would be the opposite of immersive though. Do Steve or Alex have heartbeats? Would it even make sense to hear it? In my opinion no. It feels too out of place. My solution instead was, what if something else made that heartbeat sound? Thus the Warden gained a heartbeat.

This was a really cool design work-around to mimic some really interesting sound design without breaking immersion. It also adds so much more to the Warden itself, and there are of course lore reasons as to why the Warden has a heartbeat ;)

@gangstar_giorno Lore is up to the player, you have to come to your own conclusions :D But we will always sneak in breadcrumbs of hints.

When it comes to "cheesing" the Warden with, for example, pillaring a few blocks up, I've made a conscious decision to find design solutions for that without making them break blocks. I think the obvious solution is always destruction, but I think we can make the Warden smarter.

The solution for this is still being designed and worked on, so we'll see what comes of it. But I really don't want them to break blocks. It kinda goes against Minecraft's principles. Creepers feel different because it's a one-time explosion. The Warden would do it all the time.

@Bolt_TW I think SOME cheesing is good! We don't want it so players can never feel smart. Just hopefully not for the obvious cheese.

@Illager_Captain Of course, but I feel like the Warden can be designed in a way that avoids that completely. Most of the time big mobs do this because AI and pathfinding can be a huge problem. I think we can come up with cooler ideas.

@Nexus80221773 Yes, I don't like that the Wither has to use destruction to increase difficulty. I think it's the obvious answer, but in my opinion not the most fun. Terrain manipulation through explosions is too chaotic to feel like you can strategize around it.

@melikecuscuz Wardens will dig back into the ground if they have not detected the player for a long time... And of course re-emerge if a shrieker is activated 😱

@T2813012 The sound itself is like a heartbeat, but it's up to you as a player to understand what is making that noise. Is it souls, or a heart? Both? What do you think? We leave these questions to players :D

@ReCurseHeather Oh trust me it does not T pose. The animation is very, very good, but we didn't want to show it in this video for a variety of reasons. One being that we want to keep some surprises for players when they play test it themselves :)

@littlerootlodge Yes I think for some. I want us to add some accessibility sliders to make things less horrifying. For example a slider for the Darkness effect so that it's not as effective. Otherwise right now it can be too much for some people with visual impairments.

For the record, there isn't any malicious code as of this moment, but one of the developers has seized control away from others and is actively promoting bigotry. I wouldn't take your chances in case they decide to do something in retaliation to the drama.
